FRANKLIN – Willard B. “Bert” Strawn, 82, died Nov. 10, 2011, at an Ellsworth health care facility. He was born April 1, 1929, in Atkins, Ark., the son of Alice and Jacob Strawn.
Bert joined the United States Navy in October 1948 and retired as a senior chief in January 1969, after serving during the Vietnam and Korean wars. After retiring from the Navy he spent 20 years at the Hampton Roads ILA in Virginia as a longshoreman. He was a member of Winter Harbor Masonic Lodge No. 192 AF & AM and the Shriners of Bangor.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary E. (Haas) Strawn; one son, William E. Haas and his wife, Sunday, of Orrington; two daughters, Darlyne McManus of Methuen, Mass., and Doris Edes of Eastbrook; eight grandchildren, Wayne Dow, Cathy Pierce and her husband, Paul, Gloria Sutliffe and her husband, Steve, Gary Moore and his wife, Patricia, Tammy Moore Tong and her husband, Andy, Eric Haas and his wife, Debbie, Tony Haas and his wife, Lisa, and Chris Haas and his wife, Jenna; and 16 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Lucas, Casey, Taya, Jayda, Alexandra, Andeson, Derek, Drew, Bailey, Breeanna, Wayne Jr., Jennifer, Billy, Jonathon and Christopher. He is also survived by a brother, Jacob Strawn of Hemet, Calif.; and three nephews. A special thanks to Robert Johnson and Walter and Phyllis Moore for helping the family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Frances.
In keeping with his request services will be private. Interment will be at Simpson Cemetery, Sullivan.
