FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The shooting of a local woman by her husband is being treated as an accident according to the investigating officer.

Members of the Fort Fairfield Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Bower Street around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. According to information released by Fort Fairfield Police Chief Bill Campbell, they found Robin Belanger, 48, had been shot once in the abdomen by her husband, David Belanger, no age given, with a small-caliber weapon.

“At this time the shooting appears to be accidental,” Campbell said, adding David Belanger is cooperating fully in the investigation. Robin Belanger was transported by ambulance to the Aroostook Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for injuries that were not life-threatening, Campbell said.

Detectives with the Maine State Police are assisting the Fort Fairfield department in the ongoing investigation.
