ENFIELD – Barrie L. Sutherland, 73, peacefully passed away Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, in Lincoln, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Carroll, as the youngest child of 10 to Archie W. and Mary (Osgood) Sutherland.
Barrie was a 1956 graduate of Lee Academy, and worked as a plumbing and heating technician, eventually owning his own business. He later worked as a bus and truck driver up until his retirement. Barrie enjoyed reading his newspapers, doing crossword puzzles, spending time with his family and following the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics as well as University of Maine sports. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He will also be remembered as a man who had a terrific sense of humor as well as someone who would strike up a conversation with someone he knew for 10 minutes or 10 years. One of his most notable qualities was his belief that there was always someone else who was worse off no matter what the situation. He believed there was always something he could do to ease someone else’s load. He would give anyone the shirt off his back if he thought it would help. A true people person.
Barrie is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Joyce (Doane) Sutherland; mother-in-law, Marion Doane of Enfield; daughter, Robin (Sutherland) Chase and her husband, Jed, of Farmington; daughter, Julie (Sutherland) Moeller and her husband, Richard, of Lewiston; son, Hoyt Sutherland and his wife, Lisa, of Hanover, N.H.; grandchildren, Parker and Samantha Sutherland of Hanover, N.H., Bailey Sutherland of Newburgh, and Zachary and Nicholas Moeller of Old Town; brother, Ray Sutherland and his wife, Marilyn, of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Eleanor Sutherland of Brewer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Joanne Doane of Bangor, Myron and Edna Doane, Milton and Polly Doane, and Betty Doane, all of Enfield; special nieces and nephews, Julie (Doane) Ireland and her husband, David, of Mount Desert Island, Wendy (Doane) Jones and her husband, Preston, of Hancock, Paula (Doane) Carter of Howland, Paul Doane and his wife, Jen, of Gorham, and Peter Doane of Minnesota. Barrie was predeceased by his and Joyce’s son, Dirk W. Sutherland, in 2009.
