JONESBORO – Edward Schencks Sr., 84, was born Oct. 12, 1927, in Columbia Falls, to William and Elsie (Varney) Schencks. He passed away Nov. 17, 2011, in Ellsworth.

Edward worked for Maine State Department of Transportation for many years and retired as a foreman. He was a catcher on the town of Jonesboro’s baseball team in his younger years and a lifelong New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was an independent man who built his own home and worked very hard to provide for his family. For many years, Edward and Mazie enjoyed camping, and were members of Good Sam Club. He was president of the Sunrise Wheels chapter.

Edward was predeceased by his parents, William and Elsie Schencks; sisters, Gertrude and husband, Willis Carver, Helen and her husband, Alfred Jordan, Alberta and her husband, Clayton Grant, and Nora Schencks; brothers, Frazure and William Jr.; sister-in-law, Marion and her husband, Austin Roberts; and brothers-in-law, Roger Redimarker, Theodore, Lawrence and Raymond Porter. Edward is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mazie (Porter) Schencks; daughter, Sharon and husband, Larson Alley Jr.; son, Edward Schencks Jr. and partner, Hilda Lynch; grandchildren and their spouses, Paul and Heidi Alley, Mark and Donna Alley, Kevin and Rebecca Alley; great-grandchildren, Katherine and Virginia Alley, Sarah Warner and her husband, Nathan, Brenna and Kyle Alley; great-stepgrandchildren, Shane and Valerie Renshaw, Matthew and Donna Renshaw, and Tina Renshaw; great-great-grandchild, Emily Warner; great-great-stepgrandchildren, Amber, Alex and Brianna Renshaw; sisters, Betty Redimarker, and Vertie and husband, Robert Blackburn; brother, James and wife, Annie Schencks; sisters-in-law, Melba and Lila Schencks, and Lillian Norwood; brother-in-law, William Porter; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family conveys their sincere thanks and deep appreciation to the staff of Courtland Rehabilitation & Living Center Nursing Home for Edward’s care during the last several months that he resided there.
