SEDGWICK – Martha “Marta” E. Bowes, 77, died Dec. 12, 2011, at a Deer Isle health care facility. She was born Sept. 11, 1934, in New York City, the daughter of Wallace F. and Agnes C. (Munz) Janssen.

She enjoyed art, painting and crafts. She was a great seamstress and made her own clothes, as well as for others. Marta was an avid gardener and loved music, singing, playing the organ and pipe organ. She taught music for 40 years. She had long ties with the Deer Isle community. Marta was active in Women’s Club of America, Blue Hill Garden Club, Bagaduce Chorale, Red Hat Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sargentville Thursday Club, Deer Isle and Sunset Congregational churches, where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by sons, Daniel S. Bowes of Phillipi, W.Va., and Andrew Bowes and wife, Anne, of Yorktown, Va.; daughter, Caroline Bowes Griswold and husband, Steven, of Clarkesville, Ga.; sisters, Christine Randazzo of Chula Vista, Calif., Judith Walters of Carlsbad, Calif., and Lois Goldrick and husband, Marty, of St. Joseph, Mich.; grandchildren, Carmen, Josh, Kaitlin and Benjamin Bowes, Jennifer, Elise and Spencer Griswold; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald S. Bowes, in 2010.
