WISCASSET, Maine — Funeral services for former Lincoln County Sheriff William C. Carter, who died Wednesday at age 72, have been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 29, according to Lincoln County Sheriff Lt. Michael Murphy.

The services are scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Academy gymnasium in Newcastle, including both military and law enforcement honors. A reception will be held at the Wells-Hussey American Legion Hall at 527 Main St. in Damariscotta following the services.

At the family’s request, there are no visiting hours or graveside service planned at this time.

Carter, whose law enforcement career spanned four decades, was one of the longest-tenured sheriffs in Maine history when he retired from that post in 2002.
