PORTLAND, Maine — It took police from a handful of Maine police departments 13 hours to take into custody a man who barricaded himself inside his Portland home after threatening to kill himself and others.
Portland police say they were called to the Washburn Avenue home of 41-year-old Patrick Mullen just after 3 p.m. Thursday.
Mullen wouldn’t cooperate with police and officers set up a perimeter around the home.
The department’s Special Reaction Team and hostage negotiators were called to the home. During conversations with police Mullen threatened to blow up the building and burn it to the ground and at one point he displayed a firearm.
Portland police got help from officers from South Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth.
Mullen was taken into custody at 4:30 a.m. He was hospitalized.
