BANGOR, Maine — A local man spent the holiday weekend behind bars after police say he tried to steal a utility knife from a Bangor Mall department store on Christmas Eve.
Peter Wayne Chiumiento, 21, of Bangor was arrested just before 1 p.m. Saturday after he tried to steal a knife valued at $7.99 from Sears, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.
Security confronted the suspect and notified Bangor police, Edwards said. Officer Jason Linkletter arrested Chiumiento and charged him with Class E misdemeanor theft.
With extra security patrolling the mall on the final shopping day before Christmas, Edwards said apprehending the suspect wasn’t difficult.
Chiumiento has since been released from Penobscot County Jail, and he faces up to six months in jail if convicted of the theft charge. (Ryan McLaughlin, BDN)

DDDUUUUURRRRRR!
And another simple shoplifting story hits BDN.
Why?
Slow news day or not, what is the pubic gaining by reading these non-news stories?
Either it is a question of “keeping the front page updated no matter how newsworthy it is” or just plain old lazy editors.
If the police blotters have nothing of value to report, why post these stories online? They only make the BDN (and Maine) look cheap and creepy.
Tell us when there’s a domestic dispute – perhaps – but please leave the silly shoplifting stories to store clerks and their colleagues.
There’s an “on/off” button on your computer, Einstein.
Generally, one does not shut down a computer by pressing an “off” button, there’s a couple steps in between, Einstein.
I’m no thief, but having my name in the paper for anything, especially stealing an $8 knife, would be alittle extra punishment to me!
Surprised with that middle name its not a murder charge….never make wayne your kid’s middle name.
