AUGUSTA, Maine — Attorney General William J. Schneider is warning Maine homeowners about an out-of-state chimney cleaning scam named Aero Ventilation that is going door to door in southern Maine.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the Delaware-based company contacts homeowners by phone and offers a low-cost chimney cleaning and safety inspection.
But once the inspection is complete, the company persuades the homeowner that the chimney is not safe and needs a new liner costing well over $1,000.
Authorities have advised homeowners to get a written contract before allowing any contractor to make any repairs inside their home. Door-to-door home repair contractors may not even begin the work until the homeowner’s three-day right to revoke the contract has expired.
Those who believe they are dealing with a suspicious contractor should contact their local police department.

My auto mechanic runs a similar scam every time I take my
car to be inspected. You think the AG will do anything about that?
Sounds like you need a new mechanic.
It is not the mechanic that is the problem it is that state run inspection program that is a scam.
Sometimes its the state inspection sometimes they make up rules as they go………….
The only reason these guys are trying to sell chimney liners is due to our states convoluted laws regarding chimneys and how or what can be vented into them.
How about the Big Box new car dealers that tell us we need five to seven hundred dollars in repairs EVERY 20,000 miles we have a checkup? Hear what you’re sayin Keenov.
Try buying 2 new studded snow tires at VIP in Bangor they will tell you it is against the law to replace just 2 (all studded snows on car when you bring it in) I can not find any state law in fact them using its AGAINST the Law in a sales pitch when its not is against the law.
David, it is the law because most vehicles have front wheel drive and the experts in the government claim the vehicle can go into a skid easier if you have only 2 studded tires verses 4 studded tires.
What i said is it already had studded snow tires on the car.
I agree with Roger. The State inspection system says that if your rear windsheild wiper is not working your car in uninspectable. The NANNY state has gotten so bad that people with common sense have to suffer the blow back from idiots.
who would buy ANYTHING from someone who knocks at your door?
girlscout cookies
most girl scout cookies these days are not sold door to door. They are sold online, in the office or they set up tables at the supermarket, and they are usually in uniform and accompanied by an adult.
If a door to door contractor shows up to examine my chimney I’ll likely have him or her examine the business end of my old Colt .45 as they march slowly backwards off my lawn.
If you like to keep oligarchy family businesses frequenting their nice homes in Florida and Sugarloaf, buy a new car from them.
