AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced Wednesday that Michael Brown has been named director of its Fisheries Division, while James Connolly has been named director of the Wildlife Division.

Brown, who previously served for 23 years at the Maine Department of Marine Resources, began his new duties on Tuesday.

“I’m excited about this great new opportunity,” Brown said in a press release. “I enjoyed my years at the Department of Marine Resources, but I also was ready to welcome a new challenge. With a great fisheries staff already in place at MDIF&W, I have no doubt this will be a great fit for me.”

Brown assumes the top administrative management position for the fisheries division within the department’s Bureau of Resource Management.

Brown, a Bath native and University of Maine graduate, leaves his post as a marine resource scientist at DMR, where he worked with the public, commercial fishing groups and nongovernmental organizations to address fisheries issues concerning management and sustainability of marine and anadromous fish species in Maine and New England.

Connolly, who previously served for 11 years as a regional wildlife biologist with DIF&W, also began his new duties Tuesday. He had been serving as the acting Wildlife Division director since September.

“Nothing I learned over the past few months as the acting Wildlife Division director tempered my enthusiasm for the position,” Connolly said. “In fact, it only strengthened my belief that this was the right move for me at this point in my career.

“Our division is about managing our wildlife populations and habitat, meeting our public’s expectations and ensuring that Maine’s outdoor traditions continue to thrive.”

Connolly assumes the top administrative management position for the wildlife division within DIF&W’s Bureau of Resource Management.

Connolly’s tenure at DIF&W extends back to 1980. He has worked on various research projects in the field, overseen the Bureau of Resource Management’s data processing, and has been responsible for the wildlife management program in central Maine.
