PORTLAND, Maine — Maine babies weren’t all that anxious to greet 2012. The first wasn’t born until 3:03 a.m. at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Alejandro Mejia, a boy who weighed 8 pounds and 2 ounces, was the first child for Alejandro and Carley Mejia of Springvale.
Nearly two hours later, Wyatt Kenneth Getchell arrived at 4:55 a.m. at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
“I was scheduled to come in Tuesday morning for a C-section, but he had other plans,” Wyatt’s mother, LeeAnn Getchell, 34, of Eddington said early Sunday evening.
The boy, who weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21¾ inches long, slept soundly as his father, Shawn Getchell, 34, and older sister Emma Getchell, 8, took turns holding him.
“He’s mellow and laid back just like his dad,” LeeAnn Getchell said.
Shawn Getchell works for the family-owned Getchell Agency, which manages group homes. LeeAnn Getchell is the produce manager at Paradis Foodliner in Brewer.
“He’s an addition to the family and a partner in the garage,” Wyatt’s father said of his son. “He’s the new chief mechanic.”
Big sister Emma said she was looking forward to having him come home in two or three days.
“He’s going to be very fun and easy to play with,” she said.
Down the coast, the first baby of the year for Waldo County was born at 11:21 a.m. Sunday at Waldo County General Hospital.
Kaylee Ann Skaggs had been expected to arrive on Christmas, but having a New Year’s Day birthday is okay, too, according to her dad, Jonathan Skaggs of Belfast.
“It’s definitely cool. It’s an easy birth date to remember,” he said in a telephone interview from the family’s hospital room later that afternoon. “I’m just glad she’s healthy.” First-time mother Amanda Nickerson had been scheduled to arrive at the hospital Sunday evening to have the baby induced, but she woke up at 5 a.m. when labor was beginning. After a fairly quick and relatively painless process, little Kaylee was born.
Her dad described the 8-pound, 3-ounce baby as having “chubby cheeks and a cute button nose.” Kaylee also has big feet, big hands and long, well-formed fingernails.
“She’s definitely a cute one,” Skaggs said of his daughter.
The maternity ward at Stephen Memorial Hospital in Norway appeared to be one of the busiest. Girls were delivered there at 5:27 a.m. and 9:19 a.m. to different mothers.
Babies also were delivered before noon Sunday at Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, York Hospital in York and Inland Hospital in Waterville.

There was also one at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, but I guess we’re to far north to report on….
It is not like a birth happens every day in this state, simply put all births on the front page, why does it have to be New Years, Christmas/holidays that an article has to be made form it.
There are other hospitals capable of accomodating births, Mayo as you mention, but BDN must only head to Dover for shootings it seems…tragic moments must happen only in Dover from their view.
Unfortunately, this is the time of year when journalists slack off and produce boring lists and other nonsense when they could probably be digging up more meaningful stories.
“The first wasn’t born until 3:03 a.m.”
“Nearly three hours later, Wyatt Kenneth Getchell arrived at 4:55 a.m.”
Am I reading this right? My math skills may not be the best, but shouldn’t that say nearly two hours later, not three?
In our world that makes no sense, to an unedited news article, it does

That’s called SELECTIVE reading..SMH
Congrats everyone on your new blessings!!! Nothing is better than children :)
It’s nice to see that some of the parents actually share a name.
I swear I thought the same thing.
Congratulations to all the 2012 first babies!!! I have to add that little Wyatt Getchell is just precious! He’s one of the cutest newborns I’ve ever seen – maybe that’s because he was such a big baby and all his “baby wrinkles” are all filled out. Whatever the reason he’s absolutely adorable and congratulations to his parents and big sister Emma. Happy New Year and welcome to the world little ones!
Happy New Year to all. May you all live in peace and harmony for the rest of your lives little ones. Congratulations Mom’s, Dad’s, and Siblings of these New Year’s Babies.
