AUGUSTA, Maine — Augusta police have arrested a local man in connection with the Dec. 20 abduction and kidnapping of a woman in the Walmart parking lot.

The suspect was still being questioned late Thursday afternoon and afterward was to be taken to Kennebec County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Detectives and patrol officers with the Augusta Police Department arrested Shawn A. Doray, 33, in the basement of a residence at 93 Northern Ave. in Augusta, Detective Lt. Keith Brann said in a news release issued Thursday.

Doray was taken into custody without incident after an intensive investigation by the department’s criminal investigation division, Brann said.

Brann credited the arrest in large part to help and cooperation from the public and media outlets.

“The investigation revealed that this was a totally random act where the victim and suspect were not previously known to one another,” Brann said. “Crimes of this nature are not the norm for the city and from the response of the citizens, it is not something that will be tolerated.”

According to published reports, an assailant abducted a 51-year-old woman who was walking to her car after shopping at Walmart.

Police say he showed a weapon, the type of which they did not disclose, and forced the woman to drive to an ATM, where he ordered her to withdraw cash. They did not disclose how much cash the suspect got away with before running away on foot.

  1. It would be nic to be able to have a bag of oranges and 15 minutes with this dirtbag.{See “Grifters” for reference}

  2. Too bad it wasn’t a 38 she pulled out of her purse instead of a ATM card.Remember when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

  3. As much as I’m opposed to having to pay through taxes for the stupidity which may (or may not, mind you) be caused by the addictions of others, I will gladly contribute to the incarceration of this particular lowlife, if he is indeed found to be guilty. For the “bleeding hearts” that are going to tell me to have sympathy towards this individual as he may have had a bad childhood, and/or he came from a broken family, and/or he’s loved very much by his family, and/or he’s really a great guy once you get to know him but made a bad decision, and/or he needs therapy at the expense of the taxpayers, save your breath. There is no excuse for kidnapping. I have no mercy whatsoever for him.

    1. I agree with you. I had cousins that grew up with an alcoholic  father. They would never use that as excuse to run amok. They hade worked very hard until they were diagnosed with a crippling disease. This guy is clearly a miscreant that needs to spend his days in a cell with nothing to do but think. Shame on him.
