PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of robberies, including one in which he and his girlfriend drove to the robbery site with their 4-year-old son in the car.

John Libby III pleaded guilty Thursday in Cumberland County Superior Court to five counts of robbery and one charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

The 36-year-old Libby had already pleaded guilty to robberies in Westbrook and Portland.

Security video from one store shows Libby wielding a butcher knife.

The Portland Press Herald reports that a judge sentenced Libby to three consecutive eight-year sentences, one of which was suspended. He also got four years of probation.

The judge also sentenced Libby to two consecutive 10-year terms, both suspended.

  1. Sentenced to decades in prison for his many dangerous crimes.
The judge suspended most of it.
Why should this horrible criminal be back any sooner than need be ?
What are these judges thinking ?
