LEWISTON, Maine — A Lewiston teenager is facing charges after allegedly punching a police officer in the face at a high school basketball game.

Officials said the 17-year-old boy is charged with punching Lewiston police Lt. Adam Higgins at Lewiston High School on Friday night.

Police told WMTW-TV the teen assaulted Higgins after objecting to Higgins’ searching the bag of another teenager who was entering the school gym to attend a basketball game.

The boy, whose name is not being released, was charged with assaulting a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest, criminal threatening and disorderly conduct.

Higgins received minor injuries but did not require treatment. The boy was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center.

    1. studies show that males can NOT make adult decisions and understand consequences until age 25, therefore they should NOT be charge as an adult and surely NOT be put in a adult facility to be abused until age 25. How angry do you think this 17 year old will be after serving a few months in the state prison and being sexually violated when he gets out??? I think he will be doing more than punching people in the nose!!!! Maybe some anger management etc would help? Better parenting if this was the issue? But with all the DHHS cuts………….these folks don’t stand a chance in life.

      1. Yup. Spank him on the hand.Good idea. When he gets done his counseling let him live with you. If you show him there isn’t any penalty for breaking laws,he will continue on his path of crime. I hope you still feel the same way if he really hurts or kills someone! TRY HIM AS AN ADULT!

      2. Don’t tell my wife, we got married when I was 20, and in my 2nd year in the volunteer Air Force. I can’t imagine that these two were not adult decisions. time will tell, we have only been married over thirty years. I also did not know that people coming out of jail always gets sexually assautled, where do you research to get such interesting facts? And why do you fel DHHS is some people’s only hope?

        1. Dear Lord, if you wait for DHHS to step in, you’ll be waiting forever!  That poor department needs a serious overhaul….

        2. It’s the “poor victim” mentality.  And people wonder why employers take their jobs and factories OUTSIDE the US.

      3. “Studies show that males can NOT make adult decisions and understand consequences until age 25.”

That statement ranks near the top of the pile of ignorant posts.

      4. probably be a different story if it was your daughter he assaulted….  They need to learn young or they are not going to learn. I am not saying try him as an adult, but he needs to be taught a lesson.    If he will punch a cop, he will punch anyone.

      5. So we should restrict the right of males to vote until they turn 25?  Or drink?  Or vote?  I know plenty of responsible 18 yr old men.  Another person with the “poor victim” mentality.  No wonder our country is in trouble and employers want to take their jobs elsewhere, like countries where young employees take their jobs seriously.

      6. I agree, mostly.  Parents in this case are undoubtedly awful, and science has shown that teen brain development does not stop until age 25 (or so), but even a 3 year old knows that you don’t punch a cop.  My guess:  He was trying to be a gangsta.

      7. DHHS cuts ??   My folks simply took me to church….this way, I had a CHANCE in life…..get it ?….

        1. Yea cause a good indoctrination is what everyone needs. Lets all take our kids to church so they can learn to be intolerant of others. Why don’t we start by having a good ol’ fashioned book burning. C’mon everyone, grab the kids and as many copies of Harry Potter as you can find and we will teach them right… I think I’ll pass thanks

      8. This consequences thing is a joke right- So let me guess….. either

        1.  this kid is an honor student with hopes of becoming a lawyer. Upon seeing his friend subjected to an ‘illegal’ search and seizure and while esposing the virtues of our bill of rights this heroic young man decided to stand up to the tyranny of the police state and defend our constitution knowing that the consequesnces to society for not taking such a principled stand were more than what little consequence would come to him personllay.

        or…..

        2. knowing his friend would suffer consequences for illegal items that were to be found in the bag he heroically sacrificed himself

        or …..

        3. they were his illegal items in the bag and he was afraid of the consequences to him of getting caught.

      1. correct. The lack of being able to make a living instills anger, fear…………all of what you’re seeing in that area.

    1. The problem is that way too many folks that do have one of those “Things” behave as if they don’t.  This type of behavior will be becoming more and more common in the future because more and more children are essentially raising themselves. No one is or will be boss of them, not even the police or their prison guards.

      1. You’re right.  It’s largely due to the lack of the father not being around or the fact that his discipline has been neutered by the pc police.  When I was a kid, no one would have dared to hit a cop, not only would you be in legal trouble, but you would also damage your family name.  That would incur worse wrath at home.

        1. Agreed. When I was a kid, the cops used to take you home to your parents. That was the worst possible thing to have happen. My parents never laid a hand on me. But they were the undisputed bosses of the house. I would have never dreamed of challenging them, or hitting a cop. It just wasn’t done. What’s the name of that country song? “It wasn’t a different time, it was a different world.”

          1. Schools have become daycare centers, discipline is less existent.  Parents are now supposed to be their kids friends, rather than teach them manners, morals and sending them on a path to be a respectable human being.

          2. Taught school (middle school) for 23 years. Matt is spot on. No more parents. Most “parents” turn their kids over to the government at age 4, and when something goes wrong they threaten to sue everyone except themselves.

    2. You only hear about the “bad” ones. I remember in the 70’s that a student punched the Principal at Bangor High, no jail time, just a suspension, and he turned out fine.

  1. What we have for problems in Lewiston  is plenty of subsidized housing, a rapidly growing immigrant population, and easy access to all the services anyone needs…All in a State that has,  in the past, promoted easy access to very generous welfare benefits for all comers.  Not much different than the problems encountered in any other Maine city of any size.

    1. I would say major lack of good paying jobs is probably higher on the list than any of the other thnigs you mention.

      1. Actually, many of the people in Lewiston that make the police logs didn’t come here in search of work, whether it be good paying jobs or not. Number one,  they generally have no marketable skills, and number two,  they generally aren’t interested in being gainfully employed. Sad, but true.

  2. So, while he is in lockup,  send mommy and daddy the bill for daycare,  and if they refuse to pay, attach a lean on there property.

    1. You did mean LIEN didn’t you? Or do you really want someone to LEAN on THEIR  (not THERE) property.

  3. This punk should been transported to the local ER to get stitched up before being transported to jail.

  4. Smart kid and  your next move is what??? That will show the cop not to mess with you. If you do the crime then do the time.

  5. The problem with these kids is no ones makes them mind at home and this isn’t the parents fault. You can,t even yell at a kid anymore let alone kick his butt cause you will end up in jail. And thees kids are told that from the first day they attend school. Parents  and teachers have their hands tied!!!

    1. I disagree.  From the moment you let your kids backsass you and not follow through on your threats of punishment (not hitting), THAT’S when the problem starts.  It’s the coddleing and overindulgence to let kids do whatever the hell they want that gets them started this way.  I’m also a big believer in ‘I’m the parent but I cannot expect you to respect me if I don’t respect you’.  We can still wear the pants but if we ourselves don’t use, and also expect, please and thank-you’s from our children, or teach them to respect adults and talk in a dignified manner to them, we will end up with hethens.  How they see us treat other people teaches them a lot, too.  My child has told me before ‘Mom, you’re too nice’ when she sees me interact with a store clerk or waitress.  Really?  What is too nice?  Thanking someone?  Being polite?  But I can say I’ve gotten compliments on my children’s manners so I guess I’m doing something right! lol  9 times out of 10, it’s the parent’s job (or lack thereof) that turns children into troubled adults.  I know I’ll get bashed for this, because I have in the past, but it’s true.  Dig deep enough into one of these people’s childhoods, and I guarantee it wasn’t all sunshine and lollypops.

  6. Can anybody even hypothesize what in the world these kids are thinking today? Are there any ethics or morals left? Responsibility and respect seem to have faded into black.  Do they not understand law and order? Or is it just an “in your face”  hip hop gangsta revolution.   Anarchy in its purest form.

    1. “Can anybody even hypothesize what in the world these kids are thinking today?”
That illegal search and seizure is wrong, may-be ?

      1. I doubt that is an issue.  Any high school or grade school extra curricular activities require see through/ netted backpacks or get searched for obvious reasons for the safety of the whole.  If I am reading you correctly, It is no surprise someone would take the route of a 17 yr olds rights when assaulting a police officer.  I hope I misinterpreted you.

      2. And punching someone in the face is ok? (Oh and btw, how do you know the search was illegal? Oh, thats right you must know because a cop is doing it so the cop is wrong.)

  7. PS – I have no reservations seeing my tax dollars go into this bout as opposed to placing him through the juvenile system which everyone knows is a joke.  Trust me these juveniles know that too.

  8. The newspapers should print the student’s name so everybody knows it and the boy can experience a sense of shame.

  9. Although some will disagree, the appropriate forum to disagree with the Police about a search of a backpack is not by punching him.  Unfortunately, since Rodney King, the Police can’t take a baton to some punk who does this.

  10. Can I just say…..I am so thankful to NOT live anywhere near the city of Lewiston. I’m sure there are good and decent people who live there, but unfortunately, you don’t hear about much good coming out of that place. Why is that?? What’s the problem?
