CARIBOU, Maine — A Presque Isle man charged in October in connection with a large-scale shoplifting spree has been indicted for multiple crimes by the Aroostook County grand jury.

Steven F. Bouchard, 23, was indicted on Jan. 6 on charges of theft, three counts of violation of conditions of release and also operating without a license.

The Presque Isle Police Department obtained the aid of the Maine State Police tactical team to arrest Bouchard in October after he was identified as a suspect and officers found a photo of him on Facebook displaying a submachine gun and handgun.

“It turned out that they were Airsoft guns, but they would have fooled any police officer,” Presque Isle Police Chief Matt Irwin said after Bouchard’s arrest. “They did not have red tips around them or anything.”

Local and state police executed search warrants in October at the residences of Bouchard and of a 14-year-old girl alleged to be his accomplice. Bouchard and the teen are accused of stealing, over a three-day period, thousands of dollars in merchandise from the local Walmart, including Airsoft guns, Nintendo DS systems and accessories, iPod accessories and hunting knives.

Police said the thieves went into the store armed with knives in order to cut special packaging and security features off gaming machines and other products. In once instance, they allegedly stole the display model of one gaming system by cutting off packaging used to secure it and then cut open the box to another system in order to steal wires to run the display model.

The teenage girl has been charged with felony theft and is being handled by the juvenile justice system. When the thefts occurred, she was on probation for robbery and assault committed when she was 13 years old, according to police.

Bouchard has a prior criminal history in Massachusetts with convictions for receiving stolen property, larceny, receiving a stolen vehicle and breaking and entering.
