WISCASSET, Maine — Two public hearings will be held this month for taxpayers to discuss changes in the local cost allocation formula affecting RSU 12 towns. The first meeting in Wiscasset is scheduled for Jan. 18, in the Wiscasset High School Library. The second is Jan. 25, at the Windsor School. Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m.

RSU 12 serves Alna, Chelsea, Palermo, Somerville, Westport Island, Whitefield, Windsor and Wiscasset.

The district’s board of directors voted recently to propose changing the current cost allocation formula, which asks voters to consider a new way of spreading expenses among local communities. The board’s finance committee will hold the gatherings to present information on their recommendations and hear questions and discussion from the public.

If the new funding procedure is to be in place for the coming fiscal year, voters would have to adopt changes by the end of March.
