ORONO, Maine — With the University of Maine men’s basketball team having lost five of its top eight players from last season, fans might have expected a bit of a rebuilding period during 2011-12.

Instead, coach Ted Woodward’s Black Bears are off to a solid 8-5 start, including a 2-0 mark in America East play.

The departed players accounted for more than half of UMaine’s scoring, rebounding and blocked shots and 40 percent of its assists.

However, this season’s seniors have set a strong tone, other returnees have excelled in expanded roles and some of the newcomers have worked their way into the lineup. The latest example was Saturday’s 89-70 victory over Maryland Baltimore County at Alfond Arena.

“I thought we had a lot of good [individual] performances and we were able to offset some of the foul trouble and really do a great job on the defensive end, which allowed us to play some offense aggressively,” Woodward said.

UMaine has developed effective on-court chemistry with gritty defense, balanced offense and solid depth across the board.

The Bears have plenty of perimeter scoring threats, led by senior Gerald McLemore. He is averaging 20.5 points per game while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range.

He has been complemented on the perimeter by versatile freshman guard Justin Edwards, who is second on the team in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (6.2 rpg) and assists (3.1 apg) and leads the Bears in steals (1.9 spg).

Senior guards Raheem Singleton (8.0 ppg) and Andrew Rogers (4.2) and freshman forward Kilian Cato (5.7 ppg) have been able to score outside and inside.

Rugged sophomore center Alasdair Fraser has taken over the paint for UMaine, providing 14.2 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds to go with 1.3 blocked shots per contest. Junior Mike Allison (5.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) has made his presence felt inside as has senior Svetoslav Chetinov, who missed Saturday’s game with an injury.

Freshman guard Xavier Pollard continues to earn playing time, while junior Jon McAllian of Bangor contributed valuable minutes off the bench against the Retrievers.

“We’ve been getting a lot of great contributions from a lot of different people,” Woodward said.

Against UMBC on Saturday, interior foul trouble incurred by Allison and Cato, along with the injury to Chetinov, meant the Bears needed help from their bench.

McAllian provided a defensive presence in the post and wound up with six points on two 3-pointers and two rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Pollard also chipped in.

“That’s huge for us,” Woodward said. “Those guys stepping up and helping us out in that situation is what team is all about.”

UMaine expects to be tested Wednesday night when it entertains Boston University (5-11, 1-1 AE) in a 7 p.m. game at Alfond Arena. The Bears are 5-0 at home this season, including three victories at Memorial Gym.

Barron ‘Time Out’ luncheon set Tuesday

UMaine women’s basketball coach Richard Barron on Tuesday will hold the second of his four “Time Out” luncheons at the Epic Buffet at Hollywood Slots on Main Street in Bangor.

Black Bear fans and others interested in learning about the program are encouraged to attend the luncheon, which runs from noon until 1:30 p.m. The cost is $15.

Barron will share the latest team news and answer questions about the Bears.

Patrons are encouraged to enter through the hotel lobby.

Roussel named Thomas AD

Calais native David Roussel will return to his college alma mater later this winter when he takes over as the athletic director at Thomas College in Waterville.

The 1993 Thomas graduate, who is serving as an associate dean at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, assumes the new post March 15. Roussel replaces Terry Parlin, who has been Thomas’ interim AD since August.

Roussel will take 18 years of experience to Thomas, where he was an all-league, all-district and All-New England soccer player as a senior in 1992. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1993 and later gained a master’s in business administration from Southern New Hampshire (1999).

At Saint Joseph’s, Roussel has served in numerous capacities, including head men’s soccer coach, academic records, public safety and residential life positions. In all, he coached the men’s team for five seasons and headed the women’s program for five years.

Roussel was named the AD in 2002 and held the job for four years, helping Saint Joseph’s transition to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. After a stint as the college’s institutional research officer, he was named associate dean in 2007.

Roussel, a graduate of Calais High School, also was an assistant basketball coach for the Blue Devils in the early 1990s.

Pete graduated from Bangor High School in 1980 and earned a B.S. in Journalism (Advertising) from the University of Maine in 1986. He grew up fishing at his family's camp on Sebago Lake but didn't take...

  1. UMO’s SOS is 332 out of 345, and they have yet to beat a team with a record above .500, so you do the math.

    1. As usual you are missing the point. Maine is a very solid team this year and has a real chance to win America East and make the NCAAs.  AE being so weak is working in our favor for once.

      1.  he just doesn’t want to give maine credit for what they have done so far that’s why he’s missing the point

  2. I’m rooting for them to make the post season for the 1st time in over 108 years (and win an AE tourney game for the 1st time in 5 seasons), but the reality is that they haven’t beaten anyone yet, and here it is mid Jan.

Knock off BU (RPI 237 5-11) and then we have something.  Stop your crying and educate yourselves a bit, ok?

  3. nostrajimus, will you been having lunch with coach Barron today to tell him how to win? Seeing as you seem to have all the answers on here.Get a life and leave Blodgett name out of here, shes gone remember??Your a sick person….

    1. Blodgett is the reason this occurred.  Her recruit, her watch, her lack of action to address the problem.  Now this kid will be convicted.

      It’s not rocket science!

  4. nostraimus, why wasnt it a huge article on Shareka Manerwhen she left the team? if had been last year it would of been front page!! all over T.V. Im sure there will be more to leave,as i hear hes not well liked, players arent playing hard for him..SO your comment is??? You have all the answers…..

    1. I agree.  The school & the BDN obviously covered up what happened last year.  If it were a regular Joe then it would have been on the news and TV no doubt.  Blodgett swept it under the rug and now it happens again.  (much worse the 1st time BTW)

If Blodgett would have hit it head on then this may not have occurred this time (which I assume is the same thing that happened before, because a Tiger doesn’t change it’s stripes.)

Blodgett knowingly recruited a kid with bad character (she sucker punched a kid in a HS game and was suspended for the season), and then when that kid broke the law up here in Maine Blodgett buried it.

Now this kid will have a record because Blodgett & UMO decided not to correct the behavior in the first place, and more importantly the team carried the lack of trust the past 3 seasons while Manor was present.

Personally, I think the school should make a statement about what happened, because it was a serious crime.  The crime last year was way worse though, and if that came to light then you’d see what I’m referring too.  Many many folks at UMO knew about it and chose to bury it for some reason.  I hope they come clean is all I can say.

  5. Have not heard anything about that on maner and i dont believe any of that at all…She just had enough of Barron and moved on…And im very sure he didnt care either…Not sure why u think you now everything..Maybe you should be our new A.D.?

  6. I’d rather be an AD at a D1 school, but thanks for the vote of confidence maine3406 ;)

Say hi to your buddy Cindy, and ask her what happened last year with Ms. Manor, ok?

  7. UM men worth a look see. I only care about conference play and an auto bid. Make the tournament and go from there (1 and done – but anything can happen).

The womens team will just have to be torn down and rebuilt. Cindy owns that train wreck for at least another season. What happened with Maner? Any clues that won’t get anyone in trouble?

  8. Nostrajimus,NO your the wrong one..she did something this year,im not Blodgett buddy   just get sick of you people running and saying such nasty things about people the hockey coach as well   when most of the things dont have one ounce of truth to it   get over it and move on….

    1. Trust me maine3406, you have ZERO idea what u r talking about in this regard.  It was last year, and Blodgett covered it up.  Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is part of the reason Abbott let her go.  She probably did not confide in him, because if she did then the appropriate action would have been taken I’m sure.  I’m not a lawyer, but I think what took place may have even warranted more than local law enforcement because of it’s nature.

  9. Did you know that last year’s Heisman Trophy Winner and this Year’s record breaking rookie NFL QB Cam Newton was kicked off the Florida Gators football team for “helping himself” to some dorm computers?  It was widely known and covered extensively in the print media and on TV, yet how could they do such a thing, when  sweeping it under the rug would have been so much more conveinient.  :0

That was at the U of Florida, that’s why. This is Maine.  ;)

What’s ironic here is that during the same time period all the Bangor News Channels put a suspects surveillance video on TV for the exact same crime as what occurred at UMO.  Why does that person get their mug splashed all over the TV, yet someone on a UMO athletic team gets it swept under the rug????????     What’s the difference is my question?????

Somebody’s got some splainin’ to do, Lucy!!!!  :)
