JACKMAN, Maine — A local woman suffered minor injuries early Wednesday when her vehicle left Route 15 and struck a telephone pole, according to police.

Somerset County sheriff’s Lt. Carl Gottardi said Nancy Minard, 62, of Jackman took her eyes off the road while looking at her cell phone, causing her 2000 Chrysler to cross the centerline and strike the utility pole.

Minard’s vehicle was totaled in the crash, Gottardi said, and she was transported to Jackman Health Center for treatment. Route 15 was shut down for about an hour while Central Maine Power crews replaced the broken telephone pole.

Border Patrol Agents and the Jackman Fire Department assisted the sheriff’s department at the scene, and the district attorney’s office has been called in to investigate.

    1. They need to pass a law that will let drivers pull over on the interstate or the turn pike to use cell phones right now it’s agence the law to do that.

        1. I agree. There would probably be more accidents from people traveling using cell phones and not seeing cars in the break down lane!

        1. wake up we are in a new era things move much fast now you either keep up with the time or you are left behine

  1. We continue to see accidents such as this due to driver in-attention and distraction, but is anyone getting charged with such?? This is much too common and the law allowing ticketing for such resultant behavior has been in place since early 2010……Crazy…..??

    1. Agreed. Some cars with factory GPS won’t let you play with it unless the car’s in park. Makes sense to me.

  2. When are people going to realize put down the phone a drive? Driving and phone use should be just as much as a crime as driving and drinking, it creates the same results accidents and deaths.

  3. Expect to see one of these stories every day or two until such time that their agenda of making it illegal to use phones in a vehicle passes.

    Encourage the hysteria!

  4. Here is a copy of my comment made regarding a collision in Hermon.

This was no accident.  Ms Bowden made a calculated decision to run a light and she ought to be in jail for assault with a deadly weapon lights happens.  Running traffic lights happens ALL the time and the only way to dissuade people from making this bad decision is to come down hard on them.  Ditto for talking on the phone or texting.  It’s all well and good to kill yourself but, just as in this case, these people put innocents at risk of losing their lives.  This should be a crime!  A few years in jail might be a deterrent to the next jerk who thinks it is OK to run a light, or talk/text on the phone while driving.

  5. Since insurance companies are paying for damages incurred, we are all paying.
I am 64 and make any phone calls from the parking lot before I leave.  Gives my car time to warm up, too.
