A storm that’s forming off the coast of New England is expected to bring just what many winter sports enthusiasts have been longing for: snow.
Chris Legrow of the National Weather Service says there will be snow, sometimes heavy, in the interior portions of Maine and New Hampshire on Thursday. He says there could be 6 to 8 inches of snow in those regions, while the coast will see lesser amounts, or rain. Vermont is expected to get 3 to 6 inches, followed by sleet or freezing rain.
Officials said Wednesday that said Maine’s snowpack is at one of its lowest levels on record for this time of year.
The forecast is welcome news for winter tourism businesses. In Maine, snowmobiling has been virtually nonexistent except in the far north.
The snow is expected to arrive before the Martin Luther King Day weekend, a big weekend for skiing and snowmobiling.
The results of Maine’s cooperative snow survey found measurable snow at only 14 out of 59 locations around the state where snow measurements were taken Jan. 3 and 4.
Maine Geological Survey geologist Robert Johnston said the snowpack’s water content is in the lowest 10 percent on record.
The survey is a collaborative effort that measures snowpack depth, density and water content around the state. The deepest snow, slightly under 12 inches, was found near St. Pamphile in northwestern Aroostook County.

’bout time!!!!
you said it sister. give me 12-18 inches of the stuff
….
Good luck finding someone!!
….
Any idiot can work. only the smart ones don’t
No only the rich ones ;-)
Actually they want you to GIVE them the 20 bucks
then YOU shovel the snow.
….
I used to do entire driveways for $5, plus the walkways! lol. Of course that was in the early 70’s. My cousin and I used to grab our aluminum barn shovels and canvass the town. We would do 15 or 20 driveways sometimes. Then every 13 weeks we used to clean out the chicken barns on the outskirts of town. That payed $1.65 an hour in 1972 when I started paying income taxes and SSI at the age of 12.
Yes, good luck to them, seems nowadays people just want the money, they don’t want to actually earn it.
They’re all a bunch of spoiled brats. They need money they go see mommy or pappy and bug them for money. Naturally they (the parents) give in and send them on their way.
Have you thought of calling the local schools? Kids always want to earn money….
….
Wow…Lunch too!!? Where do you live? :-)
….
Did the child have a work permit from the school?? If not someone from the State will be handing you a book on Child labor laws.. OSHA will come in next to check on safty conditions. Employment witholdings and unemployment taxes will be required along with workers comp insurance… and thats just the beginning. Good luck with all that… (-: LOL AHHH!!!! Maine the way life should be….
…
+ lunch ya live in Princdeton?
i would do it for just the lunch.
YES :) we like this news!
I have live in Maine my whole life 50+ years I use to love snow but now just let it rain!!! LOL
Summer sucks, LET IT SNOW!!!!
I live in northern aroostook county and I would say that in most winters, this story ain’t even news worthy. Heck 5 to 10 inches of snow up here in one strorm isn’t nothing to us. But this years lack of snow, this is in my mind is news worthy for once!
Yay!!! I can make some money plowing!
i dont mind the cold so the lakes will freeze over for fishing, but personally i dont like shovelling at all.
Finally my studded snows will be worth using.
The way this storm is being hyped up, I hope it actually comes, otherwise a whole bunch of people are going to look at bit hysterical.
Like the cold. Love the snow. Hate the cleanup. Totally despise that mean plow guy who pushes snow in my driveway.
As a winter/snow lover, the best compromise I can offer is this: My snowblower sure looks good just taking up space in my garage. My Skis, Snowshoes, and Snowmobile right next to it? Not so much.
And Kids, just cause we might get 5″ does not mean there is enough snow to venture out on the snowmobile trails-please think before you rip daddys sled across a landowners yard (who in this day and age was nice enough to let us use their property) tearing up the grass. You want to ruin your sled by hitting exposed rocks/stumps fine, but don’t ruin their property.
Where is all the Bread and Milk, I went to buy some and it’s all gone!!!!! and I don’t even drink milk!!!! (-: LOL!!!
SNOW DAY PLEASE!!!!
Any day between thanksgiving and April 1st without having to use a snow shovel is a good day
I’ll appreciate snow when my son is old enough to enjoy it. Until then, rain please.
Another stupid poll question. I will bet that the 40% who are looking forward to snow(and often ice) can sit home and watch it snow from inside their home, and then have someone else clear it away. Snow(and ice) is a fact of life in Maine, but dealing with it is not a pleasure.
cant wait to use my snowblower. then maybe break out the snowshoes. dont like the cold? move to central texas. they’d be happy to get any precipitation.
