MACHIAS, Maine — Members of the University of Maine at Machias Ukuleles, including leader Gene Nichols (far right), played for Frank Cassidy, a Machias attorney who is in the end stages of pancreatic cancer, in the hospice unit of the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta on Friday.
Cassidy, who has been given his last rites, was diagnosed with his illness 14 months ago. He had been active with the ukulele group as its “roadie” since 2007.
Performing are (from left) Breanna Pinkham of Belfast, Richard Donaher of Roque Bluffs, Peder Moe of Marshfield, Dennis King of Hancock, Clifton Moser of Jonesboro, and Nichols of Machiasport. The performers played and sang for about three hours for Cassidy and other veterans at the facility. Cassidy, 61, was a Seabee in the Navy 1968-72.

Yes, Frank, a Machias attorney who mostly represented court-appointed clients, always wore a bow tie.
