BANGOR, Maine — A local man pulled onto Interstate 95 early Saturday morning and quickly got up to 91 mph before he slowed down to exit, which is when Maine State Police Trooper Chris Hashey said he was able to catch up with him.

Jesse Wood, 18, reached the criminal speed just after 1 a.m. even though it had been snowing and the red bad weather advisory signs were flashing a suggested speed limit of 45 mph, the trooper said on Thursday.

“It stopped snowing but the flashing 45 sign was still flashing and there was still ice,” Hashey said.

Wood, who pulled in front of the trooper when he got onto the highway, was charged with going 91 mph in a 55-mph zone, which is a criminal offense.

“I would have stopped him whether it was snowing or summer outside,” Hashey said. “Clearly, due to the conditions, it was much more dangerous.”

  1. “Jesse Wood, 18, reached the criminal speed just after 1 a.m.” Hmm… and just what is it we need to do to slow them down?

    1. beat the living sh-t out of them on the side of the road and leave them there.this they will remember and not laugh about it with their finds when they are stoned

      1. so every 18 year old kid laughs after getting arrested while smoking pot with their friends?? really?? stereotyping just a LITTLE bit don’t you think??

      1. When you have anything to say that is worth listening to, please come back and ENLIGHTEN US! Until then, just keep embarassing yourself!!

      1. Woah!!…Let’s not go that far!  Were you immediately round house kicked in the face after posting that comment?

          1. Let it be known that I am the only person to have survived a round-house kick to the face from Chuck Norris. He might come back someday though to enact rev-

    1. What is yoir issue with Bangor High, did they flunk you out or something? Bangor is a bi school and has all kinkds of stucents. Both my daughters went there, and they are both very inteligent and have excellant jobs. It is the best school in the area for sure.

      1. hmmm….. hopefully they didn’t depend on u for an education, & if u can’t spell intelligent u should let your fingers stay on your lap.

          1. Only trying to point out to the poster above, that if you are going to be critical of someone for their grammar, you yourself should be grammatically correct.

          2. Just a guess but…I think that autumnfalls2011 was being sarcastic about mcmanineacjam’s grammer by posting with worse grammar himself.

          3. I highly doubt that. In today’s texting society, the use of abbreviated words are the norm and deemed by many as an acceptable “new” form of the English Language. Very sad.

      2. best school in the area is most def not bangor high. . . john bapst is more than likely number 1… look it up

      3. Since when does it hold any water, when someone so ignorant is telling how intelligent others are? Of course they are intelligent compared to you, but then again, who isn`t? No need to respond, since i refuse to get into a duel of wits with an unarmed person!!!

  2. Should have spent the night in jail and incurred more charges, at 18 criminal speed does not teach much of anything.

  3. OK…1 am..where or why would a young fella be goin that fast @ that hr….oh…late for work, that must be it

  4. this boy should lose his license till he is 21 or longer. i hope they took him to jail to show him this is unacceptable even if the road was good   he must have done this before to do it in the bad weather conditions thankfully no one was hurt

    1. It’s not like he was drunk driver! For that you only lose you’re license for three months or something. He didn’t hurt anyone, so does not deserve to lose his license.

      1. He very much does deserve to lose his license. Even though he didn`t hurt anyone, he could have killed someone, especially at 90+ mph. I don`t think you would be defending him if he were in an accident, and it would have been you or someone in your family involved?  Do you actually think this is the one and only time he has ever driven like this? Either way, criminal speeding equals license suspension for at least 30 days minimum in Maine, although 30 days isn`t long enough!

      2. are you effin kidding me???? at almost 100 mph he wouldn’t have hurt anyone to begin with, he would have KILLED THEM. he most certainly deserves to lose his license, and with a post like yours you should lose the right to post. ignorance…

      3. What? Because of his foolish actions, many teens probably won’t even be getting their licenses for an additional 6 months. Loosing his license a year is too mild a penalty. His car is a weapon and he easily could’ve killed himself or others.

    2. I agree.  Kids now are into their entitlement crap, no job because of the economy, but I deserve an X-Box, a cell phone, a car, insurance, driver’s ed…………..I’m not paying for it.  My kid can be 100 years of age before he gets a license…..not before a job.  I would have freaked if this guy went flying by me.  Numb enough to pull in front of a cop?  Yeah, like he should have a license.

  5. Here we go sighting another 18 year old, then trying to put the age up until at least 17 if not 18. Should we raise it to 21 because of yet another irresponsible driver. I’ m also thinking raising the military age to 21. If you aren;t old enough to drive responsible are you old enough to make life and death decisions with a milatary vehicle or worse a gun? Again I will say, you will have a handful of irresponsible individuals in all age groups. Do we punish all because of the handful we sight each year? Think of the  numbers of safe drivers we have everyday driving well.

      1. Things like this run in cycles. A few years ago I remember there was a run on elderly acciddents. No one wants to see gram or gramp get run over by a wheeler. So, the campaigns began, it didn’t seem to get too far. I think primarily because senior citizens are our #1 voters! Now, they are back to teen drivers. Sad, that probably all teens will pay for the actions of just a few. To say all teens are driving irresponsibly is a myth. That is the same as saying all people above a certain age shouldn’t be driving. Everyone is different, isn’t that what makes us American?

  6. Lucky he was stopped before he ran into a car full of innocent people. Young drivers sometimes think they are untouchable and can survive anything, like texting, drinking, speeding, drugging all behind the wheel….until they get a reality check into jail or the morgue.  :/

  7. The need to speed is so ingrained in some people. I wonder if this boy’s formula was laced in infancy? It’s difficult to reason with anyone who would drive like that. Makes you wonder what other risky choices he makes in his life? Ugh! Speeding drivers = pet peeve!

    1. Wow, quite a statement for an incident of speeding. It is hard to believe so many people are lacing their kids formula. Give me a break. Stankd on Maine Street in angor, and you will see every car on teh road speeding, some criminally. You will also see, as I do, most are women.

      1. i’m not sure of this being true anymore, but i know in 2010. men were SUMMONSED ( not just stopped) for speeding more than women… “You will also see, as I do, most are women.” do you think before you post??? just because THE ONE street that YOU stand on and see what you see, doesn’t mean its the truth…

  8. And no one over age 21 has ever been caught going 91 in a SUGGESTED 45? Oh and the push to raise the age would NOT affect this ADULT anyways! Soooooooooooo once again your spinning in of the raising the driving age is absolutely irrelevant in this case. I realize some people need a day or two off a week at the BDN but theses stir-ins with whacked out personal opinions are getting really out of control by some of your reporters.

  9. Unfortunately people are not required to take a common sense test prior to getting their license. It is all about the money and revenue created for the state. Drivers ed says as long as you keep showing us the money, we will stand behind you until you get your license, rather you belong on the road of not. Even if it takes you 27 trys to finally get it. The state says we are happy to have you, since everytime you buy gas, we collect fuel taxes. The state also says money for the following: registrations, the body shop pays taxes, as do the insurance companies. Tire companies pay taxes too, and the list goes on and on. Last but not least, the police are going to get a piece of you too(traffic violations), and we the state are happy you are on the road! Imagine this…………if we all had to take a common sense test prior to being licensed, only 10 percent of us would be on the road. Wouldn`t driving be awesome if that were the case? It is this simple……….designate a panel of 10 people, and call them the common sense court. If you get ticketed for lack of common sense, you go there instead of district court, and let them decide if you violated common sense. Get 5 common sense convictions, lose license for life!!

    1. So you feel people shoud not get thier license until 27? There are criminal speeders at all ages, by your standards, no one should get a license. The best way to stop speeding is to enforce the law always, not selectively. You rarely see criminal speeding in Veazie, I’ll bet, because most people know they pull you over for going five miles over.

      1. where in his post do you see it says you shouldn’t get your license until 27??? he’s saying if you fail the TEST 26 times, but pass on the 27th, no questions asked why u failed the first 26, they’ll instantly give you ur license when u FINALLY pass; because the state of Maine makes B A N K off  of it

      2. If you were literate enough to read, you would know that it is the voices in your head telling you that, since i never mentioned any specific age group. I was simply stating the facts/truth, and it is what it is! Why do i find myself engaging in a duel of wits with an unarmed person? Quite shameful being you!!

      3. If you could read, you would see that i said 27 TRYS/ATTEMPTS………………………not YRS!!!
Like i said, common sense isn`t so common anymore! mcmaineacjam, we now know you would be one of the ones not allowed to get your license if common sense was a prerequisite!! Just saying!!

  10. Wait a minute, this was posted last night at 8:53 pm and the first sentence says a man was pulled over early Saturday morning, but it is Friday today…Had me thinking if It was Saturday and I should be at home and not at work..Whoa…LOL

  11. Col. Robert Williams, chief of the Maine State Police says “Drivers are becoming more Brazen”
    http://bangor-launch.newspackstaging.com/2011/10/10/news/augusta/as-speeders-become-more-brazen-police-seek-to-analyze-habits/

Yup this is only one incident that has made the news… But they’ll just keep on seeking to analyze habits… How much more analyzing do you have to do before they realize that the problem hasn’t changed since cars were invented ?? The use of modern technology can deter alot of this !!! Like maybe cameras tied to radar devices that measure speed and record the vehicle and send you a speeding ticket in the mail ???

  12. BDN:  You could take a lesson from Paul Harvey.  Where’s the rest of the story?  Did he get carted off to jail?

  13. We’ll never fix this until the fines/and or jail time  are ugly enough to make someone so immature not even consider this type of behavior. Tell most 18 year kids that they won’t be driving for a year or two and have to pay a $2,000.00 fine….they’ll slow down. Most other civilized countries have far tougher laws than we do. …and they work.

  14. I always thought those flashing yellow lights were more of a suggestion than a mandate Mr. Officer…..Crazy……

    1. It is a suggestion. He was cited for 91 mph in a 55 mph zone. The reference to the yellow flashing lights was probably thrown in to stress the fact that the road conditions were less than ideal.

    2. actually it is. it’s a “cautionary” speed limit. can’t get pulled over for speeding unless you break the actual posted speed limit, how ever the police can pull you over for driving to endanger as well…

      1. Actually, these types of signs are “advisory” signs and driving over the advised limit can get one a ticket for imprudent speed…..the black on white limit signs are “regulartory” signs thus one can be cited for speeding if surpassing these……that is why in construction zones the regulatory signs are usually covered then the posted or regulated speed becomes the number posted on the orange signs…..

        1. i’m sorry pab but your wrong here, look it up. it’s a SUGGESTED/cautionary speed. it’s not mandatory. you can still do the POSTED speed limit and not get a ticket, however; like i said they CAN give you a summons for driving to endanger. . . ask your local cop.

          1. I never stated it was “mandatory” and the charge for exceeding an “advisory speed sign” is “imprudent speed”….www.maine.gov/mdot/community clearly defines the definition of the signage…..

  15.  I saw plenty of people doing that a couple of weeks ago. The only news ls that they actually caught someone.

Ya don’t get it guys. 4 wheel drive slides on ice just like 2 wheel drive. Slow down, if not for yourself, for the family member that gets to clean you off the asphalt.

  16. This is how the boys in carmel died. SPEED. This kid has no deffensive driving. I bet he is out driving today. I wonder? I hope Chris told him how stupid he is. Go Chris Hashey!

  17. If you check out his facebook page, him and his friend seem to think the whole situation is pretty funny. Obviously didn’t learn his lesson.

    1. and when one of them dies people will want us to feel sorry for them. Nope not going to happen. Their families purhaps, but not them.

  18. …but no one cited the Canadian man going 80 mph. that passed my daughter Dec 31 who was traveling at 45 mph because the light was flashing.  He fishtailed, lost control, and clipped her front bumper and she rolled her car 2 1/2 times…This person (I won’t refer to him as a man) never even went to her aid as she hung upside down in her seat belt.  A kind samaratin in a blue truck with a red beard helped her out and stayed with her until help came…Come to find out, the vehicle he was speeding in was “borrowed” with out permission.  He walks, free as a bird, and I hear he never even missed his New Year’s event.  Sometimes it’s just not fair….
