BANGOR, Maine — Passenger traffic at Bangor International Airport was up 11 percent in 2011, when more than 429,000 passengers used the airport, BIA said Thursday. It was the second consecutive year that numbers have increased at BIA.
A total of 31,282 passengers used BIA last month, making it the best December since 1998.
“We are very pleased with the 2011 numbers,” said Airport Director Rebecca Hupp. “Our passenger increases show that demand for travel at Bangor International is strong and that the region can support increased service. Capacity increases by our airlines provided more availability for BGR passengers and it benefited everyone.”
Hupp said the airport will continue to work with airlines in 2012 to add more capacity on existing routes and new routes to serve those passengers using BIA.
Currently, BIA has daily nonstop flights on Delta to Detroit and LaGuardia in New York City. US Airways has daily nonstop flights to its hubs at LaGuardia and Philadelphia, with new daily nonstop service to Washington, D.C., starting March 25. Currently, US Airways has Saturday nonstop flights to Washington. Allegiant provides nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale, Sanford/Orlando, and Tampa/St. Petersburg in Florida.

Wonder if the military flights are left out of those numbers?…………. Be interesting to know. Doesn’t talk about international flights.
Military flights are charters and are not counted in these numbers. These are for commercial flights only.
Thanks!
Now is the time to add flights to Boston with US Scare pulling out of Bar Harbor.
So how many of these people are flying “to” Bangor opposed to “out” of Bangor. And how many people that are “leaving” Bangor are actually coming back?
These numbers are the arriving and departing numbers combined.
Does this exclude ticket holders that were eaten by Langoliers that didn’t get to board their flight? Or are they still included on the technicality that a ticket had been purchased? Also if the ticket was also eaten is it null and void or is the Langolier that ate it now considered a potential passenger? XP
I think that August, Rockland, and Bar Harbor are unnecessary airports. These people (me included) can drive to Bangor or Portland. Save the one airport and close the marginal ones.
the numbers are more like 215,000 they count people twice. I hope the new arena would help bring more people in and maybe another airline.
Who is going to fly to Bangor to watch a high school basketball game? The arena is a waste of money that could have been used to bring businesses to the city…businesses that WOULD bring more people in by air.
