ASHLAND, Maine — An Ashland District School teacher arrested and charged in late November with gross sexual assault had his bail amended Thursday for violating conditions of his release.
Stephen Wierzbowski, 27, a high school English teacher at the K-12 school, was arrested a second time a few days later for violating his bail.
The high school English teacher was arrested again in December for violating his bail by using alcohol and being in possession of a weapon and some marijuana, according to Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney Carrie Linthicum. He has since pleaded guilty to the bail violation charges and been sentenced to 48 hours in jail and a $250 fine.
He remains charged with gross sexual assault and tampering with a witness.
Because of the bail violations, however, Linthicum filed a motion and argued in court Thursday to alter Wierzbowski’s conditions of release on the remaining charges so that he would be better supervised.
As a result, Linthicum said Wierzbowski will now be under the supervision of Maine Pretrial Services. She said he has signed a contract that contains numerous conditions that include him essentially being in regular contact with MPS, an organization that supervises people on probation and those who have to adhere to bail conditions.
He is now free on bail.
Wierzbowski was arrested Nov. 30 after a complaint made to the SAD 32 administration led to an investigation by State Police.
Police and school officials have not said whether the alleged victim was a student at the school, which serves kindergarten through grade 12.
Joe Carney, an officer with the Ashland Police Department, said last month the State Police investigation spans from Greenville to Ashland.
Wierzbowski was an English teacher at Greenville High School until July 2010.
Wierzbowski was immediately put on leave by the district and ordered to have no contact with students.

Let’s get this straight…he violated his conditions of release by having weapons and drugs AND tampering with a witness?! All he got was 48 hours in jail and a small fine?!
I would be surprised if his lawyer wasnt our infamous Mr. Harding. lol
He should of caught 4 new charges. Illegal Possession of Marijuana, Weapons Charge, Tampering and Violating Bail. Instead they only charge him with Violating Bail?? Pathetic!!!!
Wow, and Superintendent Johnson signed off on him. A very poor, I mean poor, background check. How can a superintendent be spread so thin and protect our children? The assumed answer; a careless, money hungry individual who puts his personal needs ahead of the students and has dubbed the school boards. The political answer; trust me I know what is best for you. It is time for parents to take the schools back and Mr. Johnson’s removal is a first step to quality and financial responsibility.
Maybe a police officer should have tipped him off that he was being investigated before he was arrested, that way he would have had a chance to terrorize the victim so that he/she wouldn’t admit to the abuse. (complete sarcasm is case anyone missed it)
Why can’t we just keep him in jail? that would be a better place for him, plus he can be on the receiving end and not always the giver!……just saying!

This on the heels of LePage threatening to cut funds or close schools? I’d say our Educational System needs all the funds it can get and that they really need to investigate their teachers more thoroughly..not intended as any disparagement toward the majority of Maine’s great teachers!
Arrested for sexual abuse – let out on bail – violates bail – goes to court – let out on bail…. I’m getting dizzy. Just lock him up.
