BANGOR, Maine — A Kenduskeag man got the ride of his life Friday night when he attempted to stop another man from stealing his truck, which he had left running outside an Essex Street apartment he was visiting, according to Bangor police.
“He noticed his truck backing from the driveway from the window and ran outside,” Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday. “As the truck backed out, the victim opened the door and attempted to pull the suspect out. At that point, the suspect shifted the truck into drive and spun the truck around with the victim still clinging to him.”
Once the truck stopped, the 26-year-old victim and several other bystanders got Kevin A. Wood, 33, of Bangor out of the truck and detained him. Police were called to the apartment house around 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Wood was charged two felonies — operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs for four oxycodone pills found on him by Officer Kim Donnell — as well as three misdemeanors: driving to endanger, reckless conduct and unauthorized use of property.
He was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where intake officers found another four oxycodone pills and changed him with another felony, trafficking in prison contraband.
Old Town police also arrested Wood last week. He was charged on Tuesday, Jan. 17, with felony possession of oxycodone as well as unlawful possession of a hallucinogenic drug, unlawful possession of a scheduled drug and for violating his bail conditions, Edwards said.
Wood remained in jail on Monday evening, a jail official said.

Not to say that people who leave their cars running deserve to get them stolen, but come on, in Bangor, the possibility of it happening must at least cross your mind!

It seems to be that they just weren’t found on the first search. The contraband charge is overkill.

They give you an opportunity before you are brought to jail to say you have things you should not have. In this case the choice was his, illegal possession or trafficking in prison contraband. Thats why not stealing and not getting arrested are good ideas. All kinds of bad things can happen to you when you start breaking the law.
the choice was his??? the police officer searched him, taking pills out of his pocket, and im ALMOST positive she didn’t say ” hey i found four pills do you have anymore on you?’… so pretty much he’s charged with another felony because the cop didn’t “finish” her job in the first place?? sorry thats BS. . . he should be going to prison, but to “hack” the charge of trafficking in prison contraband is beyond rediculous
I’m pretty sure theofficer did EXACTLY that. You are asked after being arrested if you have any more illegal possesions before being transported, you have the option to say yes or no. If they find it at the jail, it constitutes a completely different charge. As a matter of fact they could also charge him with lying to an officer for saying ‘no’.
i know first hand this kid came from a great family….he is a relative of mine…and i know our family u couldnt ask for aq better one anyone of us would give ya the shirt of our back to help someone….just to set the record straight though i think alot of us have made mistakes in life and hopefully this mistake he will learn from….so very sorry for the owner of this truck and i in no way think it is alright for this to happen i just hope and pray kevin will get the help out there that is available to better his life:(
I’m sorry for your pain but this was not just a “mistake”. A mistake is when you don’t mean to do something but you accidentally do it. This guy made a choice…a bad choice. And yes, I hope he learns from it and gets off the drugs.
Everyone of these criminals are really great guys that are misunderstood. We should actually be thankful they are in our community.
If this is the same guy I worked with on the coast in 03, he was a big loser then. Acted as if the world owed him something.

i for one am to trustworthy i leave my keys in my vehicle all the time and well guilty of leaving it running at stores too….if this would of been done to me i would be very upset….no excuses for him but i do know deep down inside he always was a great kid…but i guess those addictions do crazy things to ya….i also know i have been raised to have my families back 100 percent and i will not tell u this was right but i will ask for people just hope with a little help he will change his ways
Yeah, 33y/o, a drug addict/dealer with “a little help” will change his ways. Good luck with that. After all this time these people have finaly gotten on my last nerve. With young men and women serving our country while T-rds like this prey on the rest of us. Send his butt away for a long, long time. H-ll we pay for him one way or another anyway.

No one is blaming anything on the family. He is 33 years old. Old enough to know right from wrong.He has become a blight on society. If you think anyone feels bad for him (other than family members) you are wrong. Some people don’t want to contribute anything to life,just take. He is one of these people. And no one has ever been convicted of ant felonies in my family. Hopefully he gets whats coming to him. JAIL!
It’s time that more people start arming themselves and taking matters into their own hands, do not let yourself be a victim! I am not comfortable with a gun, but I do carry my mace with me and keep a big ol knife handy in the car. Drugs and their users (who all used to be good kids I know) are really taking over towns, cities, streets, schools. Now my house is a different story, we are well armed at home and I pity the poor druggie who steps through our door.
So in this case, your ‘big ol knife’ would have been in the hands of the criminal.
Yup, maybe in this particular case, but as for the more recent one where the woman was sexually assaulted and attacked when her her car broke down, it would have been straight through his heart, or whatever part of his body I could have sunken in to!!!! I wouldn’t have thought twice or felt even a little sorry about it either. However, I think you missed the main point, it wasn’t about just this “attempted” stolen truck, it was about how things are drastically changing here and that people really need to consider protecting themselves. I respect those who chose not to, and know that it’s not for everyone ( I can think of a few of my relatives that should not carry or own a weapon, in that case I guess they should just pray if someone ever comes after them) But I think it’s smart to protect yourself/be ready in whatever way is comfortable for you. I will be ready to protect my kids and myself if something ever happens.
With the price of gas today, who would want to keep their car / truck running without being in it?
It’s pretty sad when you can’t even warm up your vehicle without someone trying to steal it :/ There seems to be so many illegally medicated people roaming the streets today, life is becoming more dangerous by the day…sad. The man who was trying to save his truck is lucky he wasn’t killed!
Had it been a police officer trying to get him out of the truck, he would have a charge of assault with a deadly weapon to add to the list.

Why wasn’t he charged with attempted theft of the vehicle? Shouldn’t that be there? Just because he was caught, doesn’t mean he didn’t try. Unauthorized use of someones property would imply that he had been with the guy that owned it and was attempting to leave without him.
Downeastwomen 76, thank you for your kind words, regarding his family and the fact he needs help…yes he does. We all judge people when first we should walk a mile in their shoes. Kevin was a great kid, well he grew up got into drugs and they take over your life…the drugs become your master, things thay mattered to you no longer do…so he needs help to overcome the master that leads him…so I am sorry for the people he hurt but thankful he got caught and will hopefully get time off the streets and a drug program, one he couldnt afford on the outside….and well folks if ya get foodstamps, mainecare, fuel assist and or hudd housing(you know the ones who really could work or have a live in boyfriend but ya dont report) your theives to so do not comment about free program for anyone who doesnt deserve it.
