AUGUSTA, Maine — Lawmakers are looking at a bill aimed at improving relations between outdoor recreationists and private property owners.
Assistant House Republican Leader Andre Cushing’s bill is up for a hearing Monday morning before the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee. It seeks to strengthen what has become a tradition in Maine of public recreational access to private land. With so much of the state privately owned, good relations with landowners are very important to hunters and other outdoors enthusiasts.
The Hampden lawmaker’s bill would revamp the Landowners and Sportsmen Relations Advisory Board’s functions and establish a strategy for long-term funding of a landowner relations program.
It would also implement a land user certification program and update landowner liability laws as they relate to public use of private land.
Mr. Cushing as a member of the Webber family is co-owner of extensive land holdings in Maine. He should consider disclosing fully his interests and recusing himself. Imagine the howl if Ms. Quimby were proposing a similar action.
The aaction she would propose is to close all lands, I think. Is not that why she has gated here land? (yes I know it is her land and she can do what she wants with it) Mr Cushing it seems has more vision in balance.
