WASHINGTON — Declaring the American dream under siege, President Barack Obama called Tuesday night for a flurry of help for a hurting middle class and higher taxes on millionaires, delivering a State of the Union address packed with re-election themes. Restoring a fair shot for all, Obama said, is “the defining issue of our time.”
Obama outlined a vastly different vision for fixing the country than the one pressed by the Republicans challenging him in Congress and fighting to take his job in the November election. He pleaded for an active government that ensures economic fairness for everyone, just as his opponents demand that the government back off and let the free market rule.
Obama offered steps to help students afford college, a plan for more struggling homeowners to refinance their homes and tax cuts for manufacturers. He threw in politically appealing references to accountability, including warning universities they will lose federal aid if they don’t stop tuition from soaring.
Standing in front of a divided Congress, with bleak hope this election year for much of his legislative agenda, Obama spoke with voters in mind.
“We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by,” Obama said. “Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.”
A rare wave of unity splashed over the House chamber at the start. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, survivor of an assassination attempt one year ago, received sustained applause from her peers and cheers of “Gabby, Gabby, Gabby.” She blew a kiss to the podium. Obama embraced her.
Lawmakers leapt to their feet when Obama said near the start of his speech that terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, killed by a raid authorized by the president, will no longer threaten America.
At the core of Obama’s address was the improving but deeply wounded economy — the matter still driving Americans’ anxiety and the one likely to determine the next presidency.
“The state of our union is getting stronger,” Obama said, calibrating his words as millions remain unemployed. Implicit in his declaration that the American dream is “within our reach” was the recognition that, after three years of an Obama presidency, the country is not there yet.
He spoke of restoring basic goals: owning a home, earning enough to raise a family, putting a little money away for retirement.
“We can do this,” Obama said. “I know we can.” He said Americans are convinced that “Washington is broken,” but he also said it wasn’t too late to cooperate on important matters.
Republicans were not impressed. They applauded infrequently, though they did cheer when the president quoted “Republican Abraham Lincoln” as saying: “That government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves — and no more.”
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, offering the formal GOP response, called Obama’s policies “pro-poverty” and his tactics divisive.
“No feature of the Obama presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others,” Daniels said in excerpts released before the address.
In a signature swipe at the nation’s growing income gap, Obama called for a new minimum tax rate of at least 30 percent on anyone making over $1 million. Many millionaires — including one of his chief rivals, Republican Mitt Romney — pay a rate less than that because they get most of their income from investments, which are taxed at a lower rate.
“Now you can call this class warfare all you want,” Obama said, responding to a frequent criticism from the GOP presidential field. “But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense.”
Obama calls this the “Buffett rule,” named for billionaire Warren Buffett, who has said it’s unfair that his secretary pays a higher tax rate than he does. Emphasizing the point, Buffett’s secretary, Debbie Bosanek, attended the address in first lady Michelle Obama’s box.
Obama underlined every proposal with the idea that hard work and responsibility still count. He was targeting independent voters who helped seal his election in 2008 and the frustrated masses in a nation pessimistic about its course.
In a flag-waving defense of American power and influence abroad, Obama said the U.S. will safeguard its own security “against those who threaten our citizens, our friends and our interests.” On Iran, he said that while all options are on the table to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon — an implied threat to use military force — “a peaceful resolution of this issue is still possible.”
With Congress almost universally held in low regard, Obama went after an easy target in calling for reforms to keep legislators from engaging in insider trading and holding them to the same conflict-of-interest standards as those that apply to the executive branch.
With the foreclosure crisis on ongoing sore spot despite a number of administration housing initiatives over the past three years, Obama proposed a new program to allow homeowners with privately held mortgages to refinance at lower interest rates. Administration officials offered few details but estimated savings at $3,000 a year for average borrowers.
Obama proposed steps to crack down on fraud in the financial sector and mortgage industry, with a Financial Crimes Unit to monitor bankers and financial service professionals, and a separate special unit of federal prosecutors and state attorneys general to expand investigations into abusive lending that led to the housing crisis.
At a time of tight federal budgets and heavy national debt, Obama found a ready source of money to finance his ideas: He proposed to devote half of the money no longer being spent on the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan to “do some nation-building right here at home,” to help create more jobs and increase competitiveness. The other half, he said, would go to help pay down the national debt.
Obama also offered a defense of regulations that protect the American consumer — regulations often criticized by Republicans as job-killing obstacles.
“Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a government and a financial system that do the same,” Obama said. “It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody.”
Member’s of Maine’s congressional delegation offered thoughts after Obama’s speech.
“Tonight, the President described the challenges confronting America and our highest shared priority of economic growth and job creation — but what is regrettable is that these are issues we should have already addressed on a bipartisan basis long ago. The question is, will the President now go beyond words and apply leadership to truly corral the best ideas from both sides of the aisle to advance our nation, rather than advancing any one political agenda,” said Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.
“Thirteen million Americans remain out of work, and our unsustainable debt exceeds $15.2 trillion. … In this time of escalating deficits, it is important that we rein in spending and get our financial house in order while also taking into account our nation’s priorities. I am hopeful that the President’s promise tonight to seek bipartisan consensus on the important issues is more than election year rhetoric,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
“After having conducted a year-long examination of Maine’s manufacturers and touring many of them, I strongly support the President’s call to do more to boost this critical sector of our economy,” said Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine.
“I agree that we have to bring American manufacturing jobs home, invest in education and clean energy and protect Medicare and Social Security. And it’s time to end tax breaks for the rich and time for the wealthiest to start paying their fair share,” said Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine.
The president’s State of the Union address spawned several viewing parties in Maine, including one that drew about 25 local Democrats — some of whom are candidates in the November elections — to the Charles Inn in downtown Bangor.
Margaret Payne of Orono, a volunteer for Obama’s 2008 campaign who has signed on for another round, was one of the gathering’s organizers.
“It’s a great way to bring people together who support the president and to celebrate his accomplishments,” she said.
Payne said that she and other Obama campaign volunteers brought thousands of University of Maine students to the polls four years ago — two-thirds in support of their candidate.
Former Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe this fall, said he attended because he wanted to hear what is on Mainers’ minds and because he is concerned about the state of the economy and crushing health care issues that are affecting people here and across the country.
“I’m here because I care,” Dunlap said. “Nothing’s happening. There are no jobs. People are scared and that don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Charles Longo and Geoffrey Gratwick, a candidate for the Maine Senate District 32 seat now held by Sen. Nichi Farnham, were among the Bangor city councilors who turned up.
“I think that the economic agenda that the president unrolls tonight will be important to the people of Bangor,” Longo said when asked what brought him to the gathering.
Obama will follow up Tuesday night’s address with a three-day tour of five states key to his re-election bid. On Wednesday he’ll visit Iowa and Arizona to promote ideas to boost American manufacturing; on Thursday in Nevada and Colorado he’ll discuss energy, and in Michigan on Friday he’ll talk about college affordability, education and training.
Polling shows Americans are divided about Obama’s overall job performance but unsatisfied with his handling of the economy.
The speech Tuesday night comes just one week before the Florida Republican primary that could help set the trajectory for the rest of the race.
Romney, caught up in a tight contest with a resurgent Newt Gingrich, commented in advance to Obama’s speech.
“Tonight will mark another chapter in the misguided policies of the last three years — and the failed leadership of one man,” Romney said from Florida.

Now he wants to hurry up and do something productive? I think you’ve done enough Mr. President. You had a majority support in the House and Senate for the first 2 years and still couldn’t get anything productive done. Stop blaming everyone else. You are as much a failure as the rest of the corrupt in Washington. Every one of you should be fired.
You are right. He proposes nothing but new taxes and new spending. And speaks very little about his signature legislation Obamacare, his failed stimulus, the monster deficit or our crippling debt. And the clowns on the left want to give him four more years?!
Let’s check the fact list again; Clinton took Papa Bush’s deficit and turned it into a 230 billion $ surplus. W took that 230 billion $ surplus and turned it into a 1.3 trillion $ deficit. Those are facts. W started two wars which were not budgeted for then pushed through the biggest tax cut the rich have ever enjoyed. (Where are the jobs that was supposed to create?) W took his eye off the enemy in Afghanistan and lied us into a bogus war with Iraq (WMDs? where are they?) . He essentially killed and maimed thousands of American kids for nothing. Sorry Vets. I’m not dissing you. You did what you were ordered to do by an inept Commander in Chief. W initiated the bank bailout not Obama. No matter what Fox news tells you those are the facts.
So Obama comes in with a 1.3 trillion $ deficit, two wars and the rest of the world hating us.
Then he saves us from a depression, lowers taxes, ends the war in Iraq, kills bin Laden all while the GOP fights him tooth and nail on any and every attempt to create jobs.
Those are the facts. Anyone that doesn’t understand the BS he has dealt with to get all this done is either blind or stupid.
saved us from a depression ?? when?? you mean all that money he borrowed from China to “stimulate” our economy?? sorry my friend that wasnt a real economy that was called digging yourself a hole that we as American workers have to pay for.Bowing down to foreign leaders to apologize for America He really showed who and what he really is. And this guy runs our country!!!! What a disaster!!!!
Rest of the world hates us…Fact? BHO saved us from a depression…Fact? BHO lowered our taxes…Fact? So this is what passes for facts to the liberal loony left these days? It is truly sad how irrational and perhaps delusional the left has become.
“…asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense.”
Yeah, sure, and as long as you keep handing your buddies like Buffet billion dollar windfalls with decisions like the recent Keystone pipeline, your buddy billionaires won’t even notice their increased rates….
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jan/24/buffett-would-profit-keystone-cancellation/
The flagrant hipocrasy with this guy is truly astounding, as is the speed in which the morally bankrupt left flock to defend his insidious, destructive policies.
Change the subject, righties. Bait and switch. debate no issue on its merits. Always turn the tables and attack something else, even if unrelated.
The double standard is offensive to a majority of Americans.
I agree, as do most, that Mitt Romney, earned his money and is entitled to it. Should he pay a lower tax rate than I? I earned my money too. I actually had to give most of my waking hours to secure mine. Isn’t that worth something? Shouldn’t a wage earner pay no more than an investor? This is the fairness question that needs to be discussed, and finally, it is.
To claim that a majority of Americans, who favor more equality in the tax code, are morally bankrupt, that might be worthy of a good look in the mirror. You are outside the mainstream, neighbor. We tried your approach and it busted us. Now, we must move on to pursuing arguments with merit.
So punishing success and calling for redistribution of wealth is your meritorious argument? Um, good luck with that, Rex.
it’s all about EVERYONE paying their fair share in taxes, not just the middle class Americans!!
Punishing success? By charging a tax rate equal to hard working wage earners? It is not redistribution to have millionaires pay the tax rates wages earners like myslef are subjected to, it is called FAIR.
Please. For the last 50 years the tax code was progressive. It is now regressive and you are calling it redistribution to make the wealthy pay as much as the rest.
I will have good luck with this idea, as will the president. If you think the rich pay enough or too much taxes you are in the ever shrinking minority.
C’mon, call it redistribution when someone making 20 million pays lower rates than I do……..what we have now is redistribution. Simply look at the trend line on wealth distribution and it is unarguable that the current situation redistributes the wealth upwards from the many to the few.
Your argument is unprincipled and it is what is destroying the nation.
Even more “punishment” in the past, didn’t hurt the economy then. Why should we subsidize the Captains of Industry exporting business and jobs?
Flat tax. Same percentage for each and every one of us. Earn more, pay more, no matter the source of your earnings. That is the only fair way for evryone. No deductions, no loopoles. 10% federal tax and a 5% state tax.
Let’s not forget that this Democrat billionaire, Warren Buffett, bought Dexter Shoe and moved production to China. No one made him do it. He chose to move manufacturing there to increase his profits.
And exactly at what rate did uncle Warren’s secretary pay in taxes? We don’t know and will never know, but I expect that her tax consultants put it well below 15%. If she has decided to allow herself used for this bogus theater – her main prop front stage should be her released tax forms.
Your a little Slow, Fast action was needed 3 Years ago!
Ah, the liar-in-chief doing what he does best.
Can you even identify a lie he has told? The usual empty attack. Any principled arguments to make? Any at all?
He wasn’t going to raise taxes one nickel on people making under $200,000/year, or was it $250,000/year? Either way he turned around and raised cigarette taxes, and the anecdotal information I’ve heard indicates that many smokers make far less than even $100,000/year. I’d say that counts as a lie.
okay…..last I checked, smoking was a choice, and one that costs the rest of us considerably. Income taxes are NOT a choice and he has reduced YOURS.
Taxes are taxes are taxes, and I’m willing to bet that there are some low income smokers who have seen their federal tax burden increase under the Obama administration. Why is it so hard to admit that he broke a promise?
Cigarette taxes are not income taxes. Lets keep the discussion on track here. The cigarette tax was to pay to provide kids healthcare. This continued on what Bush started with S CHIP. Bush and a large number of other conservative anti-tax governors have used cigarette taxes to pay for health related programs. It is not the same thing as income taxes, which is what we were really talking about.
It is also worth adding that Obama never made a promise not to raise any tax on anything at any time. Even Norquist doesn’t ask for that extensive a pledge. He cares about state and federal income taxes.
Tax are not all the same. Some are on discretionary items where we can chose to pay or not, like cigarettes and luxury taxes.
Ronald Reagan, the messiah of conservatism, raised taxes more often and in larger increments than any democrat has since.
Why can’t you admit that Obama reduced your income taxes?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8erePM8V5U
I don’t know what “we” were talking about, but it’s clear that Obama was talking about any federal taxes.
Did my income taxes go down a little? Sure. I’ve never said that it didn’t. You on the other hand insist on defending an indefensible position. Watch the video and then try to explain to me how I’m wrong. And that’s just one broken promises, I believe that there were others out there. In fact, if I remember correctly, Obama criticized Hillary Clinton for proposing an individual health insurance mandate; it subsequently became a central component of his own legislation. Then you can take his positions on gun control and same-sex marriage. He may not have broken any promises, but do you really believe that he’s been honest about his positions?
I sure wish they would make more taxes on cigarettes. Smokers cost us all more than you can imagine. Then, tax avoidance would be a health decision!
“The health care law will not cost anything” when in fact it will cost nearly a trillion dollars, he lied….or perhaps that little remark escaped your memory.
And just for laughs, in his campaign speech last night, he attempted to take credit for bailing out the auto industry.
Lie: The bailout was begun under President George W. Bush
“The Taliban’s momentum has been broken”
Lie: NIE states the Taliban will grow stronger and is using these nonsensical “talks” with the US as a stalling tactic until US troops leave Afghanistan.
The list goes on and on and on.
How can you tell if he is lying? His mouth is moving.
the health care reform act will SAVE money, not cost money. The CBO has analyzed this and, if anything, their estimates are conservative leaning in fiscal terms and absolutely non-partisan in operational terms.
George W Bush may have talked about an auto bailout, but it was not among his “accomplishments”. This was Obama and the congress, before it was hijacked to no longer serve anybody.
And, just to shoot you down in flames, try this:
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/o/obama-lies.htm
In truth, Obama didn’t even know his father. They did not meet until he was in college. This was also the first time he was in Africa.
Barack Obama is as American as you or I.
To suggest otherwise is to admit your bigotry.
My father wasnt a citizen of a foreign country. Neither was my mother. Obama cannot say that, is NOT a natural-born citizen and therefore ISNT as American as I am. So says the U.S. Constitution anyways.
You are wrong. Children born on US soil are Americans, whether you like it or not.
Guantanamo bay to be closed within a year-thats one lie
Unemployment rate will be 8.5% without stimulus-thats two
Health Care deals will be covered on C-span-lie number 3
Cut Deficit in Half by end of first term-lie number 4My Parents met in the march on Selby-lie number 5.
When a bill lands on my Desk, The American people will have 5 days to review it before I sign it.-Thats six. I could go on all friggin day. And I have sources to back up EVERY ONE OF THEM. Try me.
He isn’t finished yet. There is plenty of work to do. A recent analysis of presidential campaign promises shows that, on average, about 75% of promises are kept across two terms. Obama is scoring about average in terms of realizing his stated goals. The media only picks up on the ones that come up short. That is the nature of the beast.
No difference than any other president. Sorry.
Good headline. The faster we get this incompetent ideologue replaced the sooner we can start on real change.
Speaking of ideologues …
What? Is he saying that Socialism is our only hope? Nice wishlist. Liberalism only works until you run out of other peoples’ money to spend. We are out of money and options except one. Do not reelect him. As soon as he is out of office, I can’t wait to see how he feels about excessively taxing millionaires.
Epic fail. That’s his legacy.
Liberalism only works until you run out of other peoples money. Maggie Thatcher at her most contemptible. Nice quip. It has a ring to it, but lacks credibility once you think it through.
We have abandoned the liberalism you speak of in exchange for a highly regressive tax code. It seems to me we have run out of money with this strategy, not the ones that came before.
Taxing wealthy people less than hard working wage earners does not promote any kind of shared prosperity. We have been through this before in our history. Because of the historically naive, we are reliving the same causes of the great depression once again.
Obamas historical legacy will be that he presided over an intransigent senate, steered the economy out of depression and saved the automobile industry. Step away from the partisan attacks and look at where his presidency started and where we are today. We are not fully healthy, but with a complete ideological divide, we have made as much progress as possible.
Watching the speech last night as the president stroked populist themes that any warm blooded American would support, like ending incentives for off-shoring jobs, it was sickening to watch the GOP refusing to acknowledge that this would be good for the people of THIS country. Cantor and McConnell came across as if they were rooting for the Chinese in the race for economic supremacy. Their lack of principle was astounding. I am certain most viewers saw it as I did.
He repeated essentially the same speech he gave the past 2 years.
The majority are tired of hearing him blather on repeatedly with the same divisive talking points. That is why so few even bothered to listen to him last night.
Liberalism = socialism? Time for a PolySci refresher (and wean off the FAUX News bandwagon).
Perhaps then you can explain this quote from Norman Matoon Thomas, head of the CPUSA who ran for President as a communist in the 30’s against FDR. “The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”
There are sometimes when words just can not express. I am silent only because I do not want to be arrested for the words I type. WOW kick someone while they are down shall we. Just a little history lesson. Japan once thought they could attack when we were according to them weak. They retracted quite fast.
And then Franklin Delano Roosevelt rounded up all the Japanese-Americans and put them in concentration camps.
Detainment centers… we called them detainment centers.
Concentration camps. Detainment centers. Re-education camps. Montana. All the same.
LOL Montana… good one
And good for him. We should do the same today but the people are too weak to do it.
Because you’re racist? Just a feeling I get.
The automatic claim of racism anytime someone dares criticize King Barry Oblamer has gotten to be passe. You may as well claim that the post was motivated by anti-canoe bigotry, it makes just about as much sense. Now please go back to occupying a cardboard box somewhere in the park.
Another excuse to be racist
There is a difference between criticizing the president and calling him Kenyan. We know the difference. You are not fooling us.
The most socially acceptable form of racism is to hide behind the falsehood of calling it dissent for another reason. This is the technique you employ here. Yours is just a follow on comment equally charged with divisive racism.
Notice how if you dissent against Obama, that is never racist but if you agree with him you are a vagrant. Your comment, once taken apart is completely based on bias. There is not a stitch of it that is based on fact or principle.
He is Kenyan, you idiot. His father was born and raised there, that makes him Kenyan!
I guess your post assumes that there are no canoes in Kenya, or that Obama has no roots there either. His ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT Aunt AND Uncle (both KENYAN) in this country for decades, tend to make me at least suspect there is a possibility that Oblamer is Kenyan. If your relatives came here from Mexico I guess it would be racist to suggest you might, and again I say MIGHT be Mexican also??? I think you see racism everywhere like some contrived boogeyman. Either that, or you will use “racism” as the excuse to silence any opposition to Oblamer. You are the same people who started to accuse Gov. LePage of being a racist also, that was until you learned that he has an adopted black son. Then when that particular claim of “racism” failed the sniff test you had to come up with something else. Nobody is listening to your boy-who-cried-wolf racist claims anymore when it comes to Oblamer. You just look more foolish and kooky each time you try it. So please, please keep claiming “racism” at the drop of a hat. Youre just helping the cause.
My mother was born in an exotic foreign land called Canada. She is not an American citizen and never has been, though she has been here for almost all of her years. I am the child of a Canadian. Does that make me Canadian? No. I have the ability, if I so choose, to become a Canadian citizen, but have never exercised that right, so I am still simply an American.
Because we have relatives from other countries, does not make us citizens of those places.
Consider, John McCain. He was born in Panama, to American parents and since they chose to list his citizenship as American, he was qualified to serve in the Senate and even as president, had he won.
I have no interest in silencing anybodies opinion. I absolutely intend to call out racist rhetoric when I see it.
If there was even a hint of a chance that Obama was foreign born, do you think the CIA and FBI would clear him for service to the Senate, let alone the Presidency? You are easily mislead, neighbor if you think there is a chance of that happening. You are either incapable of grasping simple facts or you are racist.
If you cannot accept that he is as much an American as you are, after being presented with facts, I might suggest that you examine your biases. Calling him Kenyan is a way of refusing to acknowledge him as president. It makes him and everything he does illegitimate. By extension, you denigrate every American citizen who voted for him when you call him illegitimate.
The people who keep this myth alive are racists and those looking to fleece the people for their own political gain. Those are not the attributes that exemplify good leadership. That is why when I hear this crazy talk, I fire back. It is an exercise of patriotism to support the duly elected leader of a democracy. Dissent is also patriotic, when it is rooted in principle, not bias.
You intend to “call out racist rhetoric” whenever you see it or think you see it or when it serves an alterior motive, such as silencing the critics of the President. Please dont patronize us by trying to deny that claims of racism are used in this manner. Its just makes you look silly. The point of all of this is that the original comment “somewhere in Kenya a dugout canoe is missing its paddler” is about as “racist” as saying “somewhere in Canada a snowmobile is missing its driver.” There is no racism in either comment. Unless one wishes there to be.
I am strongly against silencing. I have plenty of bones to pick with the Obama presidency myself, as I have for each and every admin in my adult life.
That comment clearly presents Obama as Kenyan, which he is not. Your attempt is just like that of Rush, to make Obama appear as an “other” to delegitimize his presidency.
Why is it that the so called constitution loving righties do not respect the democratic choice of this president? The answer varies somewhat but the central notion behind that is that he is black and a democrat. I am now fully certain that the GOP will never give a democratic president his proper respect.
You guys are not about democracy unless your candidate wins. That is not democracy.
Cardboard box slander again? Must be your unthinking, stereotypical trademark. You zapped me with that over the weekend but I didn’t see it until the commnets were closed. I apologize for including my rebuttal here, but No Way Jose (probably the same case for ltr77 too).
You know the very limited drill Gopher. Go back to your box. Take a bath. Class warfare. Progressive policies. Blah, blah, blah. Never any answers or solutions, just a rehash of Rush or Billy O. from the previous day. They all run at about the same mental speed as Poor Paul LePage. Name calling, fist pounding, and nothing constructive to contribute. At least they have some intrinsic entertainment value.
It is more than a feeling. Racism is not provable “a priori”. It exists, like a gas. Impossible to grab in your hands but still there nevertheless. The Kenya comment is clear and unambiguous racism. the “southern strategy” is also unveiled racism. Attempts to cast Obama as an “other” are classic racism. this has been around for as long as mankind. It has changed little.
It is incumbent upon those of us who believe in equality to call out blatant racism when we see it. Being afraid to enter the waters of confronting this dark reality only gives it life to continue.
He is Kenyan. If your father is born and raised in Kenya, you are automatically Kenyan.
He is certainly NOT Kenyan, even if their law would have permitted him to be a citizen. He is a citizen of only one country, the US of A, just like you and I.
Were you raised to be racist or did you pick it up on your own?
Why did he cite Indonesian as his citizenship on his college application, applying for foreign student aid?
That is not true. He is a citizen of one and only one country, The United States of America. Born August 4th 1961 in Honolulu, HI. He lived in Indonesia as a child and went to school there for a few years. He is NOT a citizen of Indonesia, or Kenya, or Uzbekibekibekistan. Apple pie, like us.
Keep dreaming.
Jimmy Carter at his finest. The only way
he has a chance of getting elected again
is to use class warfare. The sheep will love
it.
The class warfare meme is pretty stupid. You can’t talk about taxation at all without being accused of it — unless of course you’re a Republican trying to raise taxes on the working and middle classes.
This is the way the right plays. Never debate on principle when you can attack based on unsubstantiated bias alone.
The people are getting tired of it. Obama will win by a landslide. The congress will end up in democratic hands as well. The ideal of split governing has lost its luster, as it is no longer possible for the country to move forward this way.
When the most conservative democrat is more liberal than the most liberal republican, there is no place to compromise. Obama has gone three quarters of the way to reach agreement and been met with moving goalposts. This cannot continue. The people will vote for undivided government next time around. Because the GOP candidates have not offered any solutions except more of what Bush did, they cannot be viewed as viable game changers. They will only double down on what has stifled growth, impoverished too many and destroyed our economic fundamentals.
First off, you seem to keep after me so here goes.
This is pure class warfare plain and simple. As a
working class and middle class person, my taxes,
INCOME taxes have not been raised since Bush
lowered them. I personally could care less what
a rich person pays, only what I am paying. I don’t
expect anyone…rich or otherwise to give me anything
or pay anymore than they have to. I use the same tax
code they use. I also get the same tax on any investment
income I have. So they have more and make more…so what?
And I am NOT a republican…never have been and never will
be. I am a Democrat who hasn’t swallowed the kool-aid and am
one who isn’t ready to believe that the “poor” will all of a sudden become
rich because these thieves in DC want more to spend. I also believe
that these thieves do not have the right or the authority to steal
from we, the people. I also am NOT one of the 99% that these
useful idiots try to claim we all are. I AM one of the 53% who support
the ones who pay nothing. I also WORKED, SAVED and INVESTED
and have done fairly well. No one gave me a thing and since I can
safely say I WAS one of the so-called poor people, nothing any
socialist minded sheep can say will change the very basic and
simple fact…..WORK and stop whining about what others have.
Earn it and stop waiting for others to give you something or try
taking from others. Now if you want to argue that ITEMS have
gone up in price, I would agree with that. Why? Because of your
govt trying to mandate and run everything.
The inconsistencies in these talking points you’re peddling are glaring. You complain about 47% not paying federal income tax, but then determine that asking everyone to pay their fair share is an example of “class warfare.” Don’t you see the inconsistencies in that? Why is it that the average hard working Americans (the working and middle classes) pay around 20-30% in taxes, yet the wealthiest Americans pay a substantially lower rate? The middle is stuck picking up the slack on both ends.
Obviously we all use the same tax code, but the fact of the matter is that elements of the code benefit and favor certain people and behaviors. Romeny only pays 15% on his earnings for example. I pay much more than that on my income and I’m sure you probably do as well. It’s not class warfare to point that out — to point out the discrepancies. I have no problem seeing people make money, that isn’t the issue. What I see right now is debt piling on in order to afford tax cuts for those who don’t need them and me paying a higher rate than most in order to subsidize that welfare for the richest Americans. That’s not jealousy, that’s something that’s plainly obvious to any objective person. Any person that isn’t baselessly spewing “socialist” insults instead of talking about actual issues, of course.
“Barack Obama” is the Swahili term for Jimmy Carter.
Anther blatant racist remark. African references are not anything but racism.
Jimmy Carter failed to deliver in foreign affairs. Obama has presided over the most efficient and effective prosecution of terrorism in the world. His record is undeniably spectacular in this realm. Take off the blinders and celebrate that this president’s hard hitting and focused strategy has defeated our nations greatest enemy.
Ha-Ha-Ha! Good one.
Gee he actually said what I have been saying all along. Bring those jobs back home. Turn “free” trade into fair trade. Lower the boom on China and their sneaky pirating and copying of American technology. Make millionaires like Oven Mitt pay their FAIR share in taxes, just like the rest of us. Level the playing field for American small businesses. American can only be a great place to live if it is a little great for everyone. I have always thought of myself as a political independent, but I guess I am a Democrat! lol.
“Level the playing field for small businesses” …. Oh sure. That’s why all the unions and the big businesses are getting waivers from Obamacare. Small business will be devastated by it. Obama, as brilliant as he says he is, doesn’t understand that most small business operate on a small margin. You’ll see employees laid off and/or small businesses simply end operations because of Obamacare.
Funny, I own a small business and I see things just the opposite. We need to take the insane profits out of health care and make it affordable for everyone or we will all go down together. Again, we just need to make things fair again.
What insane profits? I think YOU’RE insane.
An 8 % profit margin is hardly insane.
It is when you are talking hundrreds of billions. Or as long as there is a single American who doesn’t have access to the same kind of health care as Congress. I have to comend you though, most people wouldn’t be able to defend insurance company profiteering with a straight face.
——————————
Insurance companies don’t deliver health care. You’re wrong to cite “profits in health care” when you’re referring to health insurance.. whatever that is.
Yes, of course. And they do not deny coverage either. 150 years ago there was no such thing as insurance. Now they run our lives.
——————————
Why do you buy it? If it doesn’t work for you, what good is it? Why do you buy it? It makes no sense.
The problem is that health care IS expensive. Knowledge and technology have made great strides in health care diagnosis and treatment at every level. Everyone wants great health care, but they don’t want to pay for it. People don’t really value it. “I can’t afford it!” is a common refrain, but there’s enough money to buy a new car every two years, or to buy cigarettes (talk about peeing into the wind) or to go to Orlando for a week every winter.
I do not buy it. I buy the minimum car insurance allowed by law. They have a gun to my head and I have to. I have been driving for 35 years and never scratched a fender. I have given the thieves thousands over the years because the law makes me do it. I only do business with the crooks when they bribe the legislature and get laws passed making me do business with the swine. Not a nickel more than I have to. My grand total for the year is $283 extorted out of me by insurance companies for car insurance, period.
The reason the profit margin may be 8% is that comes after unerarned bonuses paid to the management upper echelon.
Ah yes, the do nothing suits with their hands out all the time.
——————————
What is your profit margin in your small business?
I have not done my P&L for the year yet. This is a new business that I started about a year ago. I have owned a construction company and a trucking company in the past and been moderately successful in both. I am a lone eagle this time around, so the margin should be good. Low overhead and a very lean operation. I am still rebounding from a very expensive divorce! lol. I lost my health insurance, along with the new house on MDI and the Mercedes. C’est La Vie! lol.
Like you I am a one man operation. And will be paying off the divorce for at least another few years.
Well at least mine is payed for! lol. Best money I ever spent too. I do miss my garage something awful though. It is the garage I always dreamed of. 28×48, two full floors with 12 ft. ceilings on the first, 110/220 wiring throughout, white pegboard walls throughout, power troweled floor that you can see yourself in, and a Dover wood stove. I still cry a little from time to time, but it is getting better! lol. My brother said that I should have taken a more draconian approach to the ex and I would still have Garage World 2.0.
My divorce itself is paid for. I just have all the left over debt from the marriage itself that I took on thinking it was “our” debt. LOL Best money I ever spent too. I understand about the garage. Darn!
Why don’t you admit it. What you want is for Obamacare to take over insuring your employees so you can make more profit for yourself.
I am at the stage in my life where I am a one man band these days. Like I said, a SMALL business. I have had many employees in the past and always payed them a living wage and made sure that my people were not hanging around DHHS looking for help in paying their bills, like those at ChinaMart have to do. I was cursed with a conscience and it has always held me back from vast wealth.
He had two chances already to eliminate the tax cuts instituted by George Bush. Instead he urged extending those cuts not once but twice. They are now known as the Obama tax cuts for the rich. This man has zero credibility, zero leadership ability and zero common sense.
That’s not exactly how it happened. But nice try trying to revise history.
The president does not set tax policy, congress does. Learn basic civics and try again. You can do it, entitled. Most of us understand that he wanted to end those tax cuts for those who don’t need them but go ahead, make yourself believe what the record denies.
Ooh dream weaver
I dont believe you can get me through the night.
Who’s killing the American dream? Who denied the permit for the Keystone pipeline which would have created 20,000 jobs in construction, revitalized our nations refineries which are key to any national energy program and part of our nation’s economic infrastructure.
This President is working to make Americans poor.
Remember, the pipline approval is delayed, not cancelled.
“delayed”… Newspeak.
The Canadians aren’t paying any attention to the delay. They’re now making other arrangements with the Chinese.
Hopefully the same can be said about the Healthcare boondoggle. It passed but under review and hopefully when the ref comes out, they will reverse the call.
See response to gopher40 below..
President Obama stopped the USA from going to complete disaster…
After Bush the Torturer Killed 8 Million jobs, Obama Added 3 Million…
For 7.5 Years, Dubya said “the economy is strong”… In the last 6 months,
he GAVE his banking friends 850 BILLION with NO restrictions…
The GOP is Laughing at it’s ignorant voters… They will believe anything…
Seeing as how he used the information gained from the “torture” and then bragged about the results, I think that makes Oblamer as much a “torturer” as Bush was. As well as a gigantic hypocrite.
This morning I have a huge smile on my face reading the posts on this board. Why you ask? Because I can see that my fellow Mainers (even some of the liberal ones) have figured out what a fraud Oblamer is. My job here is done. :P
So we won’t be hearing any more of your sterotypical/propaganda rhetoric? And your uncalled for name calling? Thanks. Live up to it, promise?
Really.. I got the opposite reaction… one of how bigoted and ignorant they were… funny, how we see it as such extreme opposites. I wonder which one will win… Bigotry or Humanity…
Anybody But Obama 2012
Be careful for what you ask …
You think we’re “asking”?? guess again. Its not a request.
The stage is set for the 2012 elections of contrasting views, the one offered by Obama of positive optimism and hard work (How bout that SEAL Team rescue!) or the views that spring forth from a wrecked clown car that perfectly represented the exact opposite. Romney who is Mr. .001% and resents all that is wrong with our tax structure and brings to light the virtues of Vulture/Vampire capitalism. Then there’s Newt, Mr. Family values and all the baggage he brings from being a DC lobbyist/Historian/influence peddler/huckster or whatever he’s calling it these days. Basically the choice is Republican doom and gloom and the ratcheting up of the same polices that made the mess we currently witness or the Democratic view of cleaning up the mess created by Bush and the 2010 Republicans. That’s what I heard Obama say, now it’s up to us to decide.
Well the American Dream took a huge hit when nancy Pelosi, Harry reid and BO came to office and passed the boondoggle at the 11th hour that is going to be tied up in courts for years to come.
That sounds like a racist slur and to me and represents the stupidity of the republicans in general and the tea party specifically, and you especially. Our President has been trying to bring this country together and it is clear how tough a job that is when people like you crawl from the slime and puke their racist crap on our country. I hope you don’t have kids and if you do I hope they are not influenced by your stupidity.
Racism is a strong platform of the republican party. Fear and cowardice are the other two planks.
Funny. Tell that to Alan West, Condeleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Marko Rubio, etc.
This from the same people who want to “hang” Clarence Thomas and use any excuse possible to disqualify Herman Cain. I think the racists are the ones who are always concerned about race. That would be the leftists like 5thgenstupid or Rexican. I dont give a crap about what race you are, its only skin. Whats inside is what counts, and what these leftists have inside them is ugly, vile and putrid. No wonder they need to drag everyone else down around them by dividing us based on false claims of racism.
A prejudiced zealot by any other name … , And how are we to judge “what’s inside” you?
By your actions. And, thus far, the President’s actions have not been good for the people or the country.
Yes, the rich and greedy people have no use for his actions and policies. I agree. Obama has not been good for them. They would love to replace him with Newtie or Oven Mitt. A couple of clods who are firmly in the pocket of the top 1%. I though that Obama made some very good points last night, but then again, I listened with an open mind. He could give some of you the winning lottery numbers and you would still want to see his birth certificate.
Give me a break. Obama is owned by the 1%. He’s not going to punish them. He’s only touting the class warfare rhetoric in order to get re-elected. And the rich know that even if he does get them to pay a little more in taxes, they’ll just pass it on to the middle and lower class folks.
Lets turn this around Gopher. Do you feel I am qualified to know whats inside you based upon a few posts on a message board? Does reading a few things you said sum you up or could there possibly be more to you than that? I wouldnt pretend to know what makes you tick without a bit more information, but I dont rush to conclusions. Can the same be said of you?
And the pillars of the DNC are fraud, hypocrisy and envy. Or to sum it up in one word; socialism.
Isn’t this state of the union address – to be about what is realistic goals that can be reached and not hype? It sounds to me like Obama is in Lala land.
And the Tea Party is mired in No No Land.
The President quoted Abraham Lincoln when it said,
“That government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves — and no more.” It’s too bad his actions prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he doesn’t believe this. He is clearly for a bigger, more intrusive, overspending government.
The President did neglect talking about the non-existent budget, necessary spending cuts, the blocking of bills in the Senate by the Democratic Majority Leader, the Keystone Pipeline project, and the corruption in Congress. Instead, he put the blame on the Bush administration, the Republicans in Congress, the banks, Wall Street, the wealthy, and, interestingly, China.
Overall, the entire speech was empty of what is needed to get America back to the top. We cannot continue the spending, over-regulating, and intrusion that his administration is pushing. We cannot ignore the need for entitlement spending cuts, slimming down the government, relaxing regulations and lowering the taxes that are killing businesses. And we cannot continue with this class warfare diatribe that he and his minions are using in a veiled effort to get another term.
Ironically, the President ended his speech by telling us all that anyone that believe America is in decline is misinformed. What a crock.
In November, the people will speak, and Obama will go back to Chicago. If this doesn’t happen, then America is doomed.
All the things you claim he didn’t talk about, he did. He talked about consolidating agencies, repealing regulations (both in regards to business and education), giving tax credits to businesses (especially those bring jobs back to America), reforming unstable social safety net systems, lowering the deficit, and investing in infrastructure and education. There was absolutely no element of class warfare in his speech either — he explained why that stupid meme that Republicans keep parroting is garbage. There was absolutely no blaming of the Republican party either. He said that both sides need to work together and both are guilty of causing the gridlock.
It’s people like you that are holding America back. You have absolutely no faith in this country and are so distrusting of huge segments of the American population. You think everyone who disagrees with you is plotting some nefarious scheme to destroy the country. It’s ridiculous. Keep criticizing the President for these made-up things all you want, but you’re not being honest when you act like you disagree with the President simply for policy reasons.
Excellent points and well said!
– It’s already been estimated that his consolidation program will cost more money that it is worth.
– Tax credits are nothing more then smoke and mirrors, and usually end up costing the taxpayer and business owners more. But, since the costs will be passed on to the consumer, he considers it a savings.
– If he actually wanted to lower the deficit, he would cut spending. Instead, he’s about to add a couple trillion more to the debt limit.
– Infrastructure and education already have sufficient funding budgeted. Trouble is, the funds are continually deferred for other pet projects. Besides, the states are supposed to fund the major portions of infrastructure and educational programs related to each particular state.
– Class warfare was peppered throughout is speech. Didn’t you hear is constant referral to the wealthy and their fair share?
– “With our without Congress…..” Just one of his side slaps to the Republicans.
– He has to blame both sides in order to attract the Independent voter.
I am not holding America back. I have complete faith in the American people. I gave over 20 years of my life serving this nation in uniform, and as a veteran, I am still willing to lay down my life for the freedoms and liberties we deserve.
By the way, as an American, I have a right to criticize the President or anyone else that I disagree with. I’ve often disagreed with President Bush in these comment threads. But, President Obama is a different issue altogether. He’s not in this for the betterment of the nation, only for the betterment of his agenda. And he proved that last night.
EJP, what’s you’re proving is that the President could do anything and you would denounce his work. You created a laundry list of things that you imagine the President didn’t talk about last night, but he did talk extensively about all those things on your list. When I point that out, you argue why his proposals are bad. Well which is it? Did he not talk about those things or did you just not like the way he said them? It can’t be both. It’d also probably be best if you’d stop lying in order to get your point across.
I wrote, ”
The President did neglect talking about the non-existent budget, necessary spending cuts, the blocking of bills in the Senate by the Democratic Majority Leader, the Keystone Pipeline project, and the corruption in Congress.”
– Non-existent budget: As of yesterday, it had been 1,000 days since the Dems had put forward a budget. He failed to mention that.
– Necessary spending cuts: He failed to mention cuts to entitlements, government, or social programs. Of course, he mentioned consolidating departments, but that comes with a higher price tag. Other hints at reducing spending were vague, at best.
– Forgot completely about his favorite Senator, Harry Reid, who as, thus far, blocked nearly 30 bills sent up from the House, most of which would help the economy and create jobs.
– The Keystone Pipeline: How could that one possibly slip his mind?
– Corruption in Congress: Dodd and Frank got a free pass because Obama blamed everything on the banks. His little “insider trading” issue will not be brought up because it has been blocked in the Senate. Reid strikes again.
By the way, you might want to read the transcript from the speech. It’s obvious that you weren’t listening with both ears open. Here’s a link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jan/25/state-of-the-union-address-full-text?newsfeed=true
So to recap, he talked about everything you said he didn’t talk about — you just didn’t like what he had to say.
Wow. You really can’t comprehend, can you?
Reading comments on this page by those on team extreme is like watching a fizzy (for those who remember them) in water as it rapidly spins around in circles before it completely dissolves into nothing, which is all they have, spin and soon nothing.
….
I cannot find the reasoning or understand how one American could possibly find the reason or excuse to vote for this person again to be the president of this country.
…
Entitled to your opinion, but don’t assume you’ve convinced us that it’s valid.
The people that will vote for Obama, and there will be many, are either established Democrats that don’t know or care about the issues as long as there is a ‘D’ by the name, welfare recipients, environmentalists, global warming alarmists, anti-gun, anti-Christian, anti-Capitalists, Occupiers, or any combination of the aforementioned.
Well, I guess I don’t need to know myself if I have you two fine gents to tell me what to think…. ( cough)
If you have no ability to suspect you may be wrong then there is nothing to debate. You are so rooted in your ideology that you perceive anyone that doesn’t think like you of being incapable of thinking. How likely is that? So given that it isn’t, you two need to consider that you could be wrong.. not saying you are, but until you are willing to be in a position to be open to having you mind changed, all your speech is slanted and nothing you say moves my position.
Couldn’t find it right off in this version of the report but the AP version said that Rep. Cantor was appearing on MSNBC this morning. Liberal media, eh?
BDN has headlines referring to healthcare reform as “Obamacare.” Liberal media, eh?
Hitler gave good speeches also.
Put it this way. Is one of the reasons you hate Obama is because he is black?
ya cant critisize the messiah wo being a racist he is just as much white as BLACK !
the american dream wa sin danger the day he was elected
