HAMPDEN, Maine — A Vermont man who was heading north to visit family in Brewer died Thursday from injuries he suffered in a crash along the northbound traveling lanes of Interstate 95, just a few miles from his destination.
Douglas Dapice, 70, of South Burlington, Vt., who suffered internal and arm injuries, died shortly after arriving at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Trooper Darren Vittum of the Maine State Police said Thursday night.
Dapice’s 69-year-old wife, Lynne, was taken to EMMC for treatment of arm and hand injuries resulting from the accident, Vittum said. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Vittum said the accident occurred about 4:18 p.m. just north of the I-95 rest area in Hampden.
He said Dapice fell asleep behind the wheel of his 2000 Volvo C70 station wagon. When he awoke after traveling over the rumble strip, he overcorrected, sending the car into a skid and into the median, where it struck a large rock, went airborne and then hit a tree. The station wagon came to a rest about 50 feet beyond the tree, he said.
Vittum said Dapice and his wife both were wearing seat belts. Their car was demolished, he said.

why does there always have to be someone to make a rude comment when there is a tragedy .show some respect or keep it to yourself. what ever happend to compassion jeez.
Just remember to pull over if you are sleepy and take a quick nap. A sleepy driver is just as lethal is a drunk driver.
