WILTON, Maine — Police say one of the victims of an accident on Route 2 in Wilton this week that took two lives was not legally allowed to be behind the wheel and tried to pass another vehicle illegally.

Police told the Sun Journal that 36-year-old Joseph Breton of Jay had his license revoked indefinitely as a habitual offender in 2007 and tried to pass another vehicle in a double-yellow line no-passing zone on Monday afternoon. Roads were slick with snow and ice.

Speed and reckless driving were blamed.

Breton’s car collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by David Miller of Wilton. Miller’s mother, 80-year-old Meta Sevigny of Farmington, was also killed.

Miller and Breton’s passenger were injured. The driver of the vehicle Breton tried to pass was unhurt.

  1. What does it matter?  My neighbor drives without a license everyday.  I have reported this to the police department and they do nothing.

    1. Next time tell them you think your neighbor has marijuana growing in the trunk of their car.

      They’ll send in 32 cops and 14 MDEA agents.

      1. Thanks for the advice, it may work.  I just hate it because he has nothing, so he has nothing to lose.

          1. They can’t afford to keep him either. The judges aren’t doing anything. I think the police are getting frustrated and aren’t bothering to arrest because the judges are doing so little. I know if I was a police officer I would be very mad. My blood pressure goes so high that I don’t even read the court findings in the paper anymore. DISMISSED…. what?? He raped her, she has bruising, ect. He says that he had her permission, are you kidding me? For the police its a thankless job unless its just a speeding ticket. If they get in front of the judge, he usually lets them go.

        1. Just think of the other people you may be saving if he hits them w/his car because I’m sure he has no insurance either.

      2. Lol. depends on the town. Some towns are all over it and some don’t care.  Bath salts seem to be the password of today…

    2. Keep reporting! I have had to. The police actually told me that we would have to catch him driving. I bugged the police until they sat with me until he drove by. I said, there he goes. They pulled him over and booked him. I cried. So sad for the entire problem. Approx. 6 months later he drove again and hit two people driving them off the road within a half mile of each other.  He is finally being supervised, and finally doesn’t hold his own keys. It is sad that police refuse to arrest those that they are very aware are drinking and driving daily. When they pick them up after they hit two people they know them on a first name basis, because they have such a reputation for drinking and driving.  Same with drug houses, the police can tell you which houses have the druggies going in and out, with baby makers. I can never figure out why they don’t rescue the children at birth, if she isn’t getting a check, maybe she would stop making them. If I can see the drugs, I know he can. I have written so many reports that I got carpal tunnel. We can never give up, it could save your family member.

  2. Joseph Breton should be charged with vehicular homicide, tried by jury, and NOT ALLOWED TO PLEA BARGAIN.

    He should rot in jail for killing someone’s mom.

      1. This article only uses the term “victim;” it does not say he was one of the fatalities.  If one had not read the previous article, one would not know.

        1. Logic folks.  According to the  article:

          * 2 people died
          * one of the drivers, Breton, who was not allowed to be driving, was a victim
          * the other driver was Miller, who was injured (therefore not killed)
          * Miller’s mother died
          * Breton’s passenger was injured
          * The driver of the third car was unhurt

          Therefore, unless there was someone else involved n the accident, the driver Breton, who was a “victim” must have been the second fatality. Reading the previous article is unnecessary.

  3. As in other cases and instances, the law can only do so much to prevent someone from doing something they should not…..personal responsibility and wise choices, or should I say a lack of, are a character quality that is an eroding cancer on society and this end result is a perfect example….people with a history like this should not “enjoy” the freedom to choose……Crazy…..

  4. And definitive proof that comments from people that don’t read past the headline aren’t unusual.

  5. He is one of the deceased. Unfortunately he took another person with him. Pulling someone’s license does not stop violators  from driving. They will always get behind the wheel again and this is the worst case scenario

    1. AND…chances are that the unlicensed driver had no auto insurance to cover the victims in both cars. Guess who is gonna pay?

      1. if this is the case, Mr. Miller’s insurance will kick in and pick-up. I can’t say all of the expense but it  should cover most of the expense in his (Mr.M) vehicle.  All of our insurance carries a coverage for this issue.

        It really shouldn’t matter about this right now. 2 people have lost their lives due to the mistake of the other. Stupidity kicked and and he was killed, however the innocent bystander that died not deserve this.
        Support should be given to her family, however their is another family that indeeds needs support as well. They have lost a loved one, but also have to live with the fact that their loved one also took the life of an innocent woman. Then you have to factor in if they live in the same town, if this is the case they have to face the other loved ones daily. Its going to be a very rough road to plow on both sides.
        Condolences to the families involved. May you all find a way to move on from this tragic day!

        1. It was not a “mistake”.  It was intentional.  How was it a mistake?  Did he slip and fall into the drivers seat while the car was going down the highway?  It was an intentional action that put put him in the drivers seat.  The State already determined he was not responsible enough to operate a car.  As far as his family, I have empathy, not sympathy.  This was an intentional act to operate an auto after being convicted and having his license revoked.

  6. People who are not legally allowed to drive should not own a vehicle. If they use someone elses vehicle,then that person should also be held accountable. As I read the article,I was led to believe there were 3 that were deceased. First sentence said he was a victim that took 2 lives.IMO it was a misleading story.

    1. It is already a law. If you knowingly allow someone without a license to drive your, you are liable.

    2. You need to amend your statement.  My mother is 80.  She never had a license.  My father died about 6 years ago.  He always drove.  She still has a car that is registered in her name.  She has someone drive her.  It is usually me, my sister, or a close friend.  She is not the only person in this state.  I know of several others.  Are you going to take her only transportation away because the “victim”, who should be called a murderer?  Why would you punish my mother because of this?  She did nothing wrong.  You want to take away her rights because of this murderer?  I am using the term murderer because that is what he did to the innocent “victims”.  He intentionally used a car in a manner that resulted in death of 2.  I contend it is no different than pointing a gun at a couple and pulling the trigger.  Maybe not 1st degree murder, but definitely 2nd degree.

      I agree this is a very poorly written article.

    3. I think they flag the registration when you are registering a vehicle on a suspended license.  However this doesn’t make a difference. If someone is going to drive w/o license they are going to do it.

      There are laws already in place. I think maybe the penalties should be steeper.

  7. What makes me mad with these people who treat driving like it’s a death defying feat, is that most of them aren’t the ones who die when the feat goes bad. I guess this time it worked like it should except for the fact Mr. Breton took another person out with him.

  8. Darwin loves people like Breton.  He just proved Darwin’s theory.  Unfortunately he also killed someone else.

  9. Lewiston man gets nearly 8 years for stealing shotgun and selling it. If this man had gotten 8 years his traffic offenses two people would be alive today. Its time that when people are caught for an OUI, they are placed in jail at least one year! With serious fines. OUI, causes murder, the judge states manslaughter. A police officer just got away with a slap on the wrist, had he gotten nearly 8 years, he wouldn’t be drinking and driving again. Something has to be done to protect our children and innocent people on our highways. OUI, driving under the influence of drugs, repeated traffic violations (driving to endanger) all must be strictly enforced by jail time not just a removal of license. In fact the police officer they stated already has his license to drive back and forth to work. I believe he is a state trooper. If my memory is correct a state trooper, can always be called to duty 24hrs on-call, therefore, he basically has his license back.
