LEWISTON, Maine — A former FedEx worker has been sentenced to nearly eight years in federal prison for stealing a shotgun from the delivery company’s Lewiston distribution center and selling it.

Raymond Adams of Lewiston was sent to prison for seven years and 10 months and given three years of probation after he was convicted on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say the 43-year-old Adams worked at the distribution center in September 2009 when he saw a package marked “firearm.” The gun had been shipped from Texas and was addressed to a Maine gunsmith. Authorities say Adams took the package home and sold it for $150.

The Sun Journal reported the man who bought it wrote Adams a check with the serial number in the memo line.

  1. Just think, if he worked for the US Postal Service he would have just gotten 2 weeks paid administrative leave.

  2. Wow, FedEx is having a bad year. First, the video at the holidays of the guy throwing the computer screen over a fence without looking and now this.

I guess the crime doesn’t fit the punishment, 8 years really with 3 years probation.

    1. You are comparing a Federal Crime tried in a Federal Court to State Crimes tried in State Courts. However when it is all added up it does seem a bit lengthy of a sentence compared to the ones you mention. I will say that if the crimes you mention somehow became federal crimes the sentences would likely be much harsher.

  4. Should have claimed he belonged to a Gang and he would have been sent free and given as many guns as he could carry.. The Government sells guns to gangs ya know, ask Obama..

  5. Wow, Fed Ex is a good gig from what I hear. Only got 150 bucks and didnt sell it for untraceable cash? Foolish all around. Nearly 8 years does seem a bit harsh. Gun Crimes come with higher sentencing guidelines in Federal court however.

  6. In the movie “Castaway” Tom Hanks played Chuck, a Fedex manager who survived a plane crash and was marooned on an island for 4 years with “Wilson.” Perhaps Tom Hanks would paint one for Ray if he supplied the ball.
