SANGERVILLE – Virginia L. Curtis, 88, wife of the late Sidney A. Curtis, died Jan. 27, 2012, with her loving family by her side at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft, after a brief illness. She was born May 5, 1923, in Dexter, the daughter of Oscar and Dora (Nadeau) Elderkin.
Virginia had been raised in Dexter and was an active member of North Dexter Grange Hall, where she ran the flea market for many years. She loved to knit and she made mittens, trigger finger mittens and winter socks, for which she won many ribbons at the Exhibition Hall at Piscataquis Valley Fair. At the fair she enjoyed the horse and pony pulling, as well as seeing old friends. She loved to cook for her family and have family gatherings. She was well known for her yeast rolls, as they were the greatest and always in demand.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband; and two sisters, Dorothy Merchant and Barbara Buzzell. She is survived by her loving children, Richard Curtis of Sangerville, Bette Gray and her friend, David Sherwood, of Abbot, Kenneth Curtis and his wife, Carol, of Sangerville and Jane Dyer and her husband, Jack, of Monson. She leaves 12 grandchildren, Lori (Badger) Borja, Kevin Badger, Dale Gray, Dean Gray, Gerri Morrell, Becky Curtis, Timmy Curtis, Shelly (Curtis) Paradis, Kimberly (Curtis) Coppa, Michael Bragdon, Angela (Bragdon) Chase and Jessica (Bragdon) Mason.
She was blessed with 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her loving sister, Hope Knowles of Holden; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Mary Rideout.
Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, where funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, with Pastor Kevin Stevens officiating.
Spring burial will be in the family lot at Rural Grove Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02210.
