In case you missed it the first or fifth time I wrote about it:

The breast is a powerful thing.

Behold the power of the breast!

I say it again — to those who have them, have lost them, who love those who lost them or loved those whom they have lost because of them.

Here is what we have learned this week: We indeed have a say.

This lesson that we have learned goes far beyond breast cancer.

It goes to the very heart and the very power that we as feeling, human individuals have for those we love and for those whom we know that others love.

And if I may say it — “You all kicked a bit of tail.”

The Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure made a big mistake this week in deciding not to provide resources to Planned Parenthood. As The Associated Press reported, Komen adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under government investigation, citing a probe launched by a Florida congressman at the urging of anti-abortion groups.

But to be perfectly honest, that was its decision.

The nonprofit organization has the absolute right to decide where its money should be spent.

But you as their donors have the absolute right to decide where you spend your money.

Simple as that.

Those of you who sent an email off to your legislator or your local branch of government or the national affiliate made a difference.

Those of you who — upon hearing that the Komen Foundation would no longer provide grant money to Planned Parenthood — said, “I will never again support this organization,” made a difference.

Clearly you changed their minds.

Because of you, an enormous agency with a wealth of power that does great things for breast cancer research changed its mind.

You mattered.

You mattered, with a bit of help from the press.

Many years my husband and I have sat on our front porch and watched thousands of people from the Bangor area walk proudly by our home to raise money for “The Cure.”

Of late, I walk myself, along with my kids. My husband watches from the porch because he likes to sit there and wave and talk to all of the members of the community we know as they walk by raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research for an organization we have all stood proud to support.

This week that support was threatened.

This week, the support for The Cure was questioned.

The one thing we all seemed to agree on was that we did not question our desire to support breast cancer research or support.

I believe the Susan G. Komen Foundation made a mistake. It was perhaps a political mistake and a business mistake.

It would appear the foundation has admitted that.

That actually takes a bit of guts.

Guts get things done.

There is a chance that we can all move on and get to our common goal.

Breasts and guts.

It’s a powerful combination.

Perhaps most of all is the admission of a mistake. I think the Susan G. Komen Foundation has admitted that. I think you all are responsible for it as well, as the media.

And sometimes, just sometimes, things turn out all right.

  1. I wasn’t aware that the Susan G. Komen Foundation had reversed their decision. Thanks for bringing it to my attention Renee. Your story did make a difference, I will never donate to them again.

  2. Research has proven that abortion can often lead to breast cancer later in life. Not all cases of breast cancer but it is a significant contributor.  Renee Ordway offers just another Bangor Daily article regurgitating liberal propaganda for simple minds who refuse to do their own research All in the name of Planned Parenthood’s “good name” that is responsible for the death of millions of unborn babies.

    1. Uh, providing a link to a crazy organization isn’t a good way to support your claim, especially when the crazy organization acts crazy by attacking cancer experts.

Here’s what the American Cancer Society says in its “Breast Cancer: Facts and Figures 2011-2012” report (http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/content/@epidemiologysurveilance/documents/document/acspc-030975.pdf):

“There are also persistent claims that women who have had an abortion are at an increased risk for developing breast cancer based on early studies that have since been deemed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology to be methodologically flawed. There now exists a large body of solid scientific evidence that confirms there is no link between breast cancer and abortion (either spontaneous or induced), which includes a review by a panel of experts convened by the National Cancer Institute in 2003.49 For more information, see the separate American Cancer Society document called Is Abortion Linked to Breast Cancer?, which is available at cancer.org.”There now exists a large body of solid scientific evidence that confirms there is no link between breast cancer and abortion (either spontaneous or induced), which includes a review by a panel of experts convened by the National Cancer Institute in 2003.49 For more information, see the separate American Cancer Society document called Is Abortion Linked to Breast Cancer?, which is available at cancer.org.”
For the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology reference, the report cites Couzin J. Cancer risk. Review rules out abortion-cancer link. Science. Mar 7 2003;299(5612):1498.50.

      1. Thanks for the link.Hopefully PP will get much more help now and we can get Stearns out of office,as well as the anti choice clown who shouldn’t be at the head of SGK with her huge salary/perks.The anti choicers would come up with a “study”linking abortion to aliens.

    2. What kind of research have you done? The research that I have done shows that Conservative narrow minded people are proven to have a low IQ on average compared to liberals.

    3. See below for refutation of your invalid claim of an abortion/cancer link.  As for resposibility for “deaths”, over the decades PP has probably averted several million early deaths of women and enhanced the overall “health” of their families.

  3. It is unfortunate “we” sometimes put “our mouth in motion before our brain is in gear. It may take some time for the foundation to recover!

  4. The Komen Foundation just needs to stipulate in their grants  to Planned Parenthood that all monies from them will be used for womens breast cancer period.

    1. Just like the government does about abortion????  Planned Parenthood has ways of making sure that their primary business of abortion is funded.

        1. According to the Associated Press, 71 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services were devoted to birth control and testing for sexually transmitted diseases in 2010. Cancer screening represented 15 percent of services. Abortions represented only 3 percent of services.

          1. 3 percent or 99.9 percent PP is still in the abortion business no matter how you try to trivialize it. People who are against the taking of an innocent life in the name of “choice” oppose this and always will. That is what standing on principle is all about.

          2. Either way a baby dies. That is no exaggeration. If I hit you in a cross walk while you are pregnant and your baby dies I am responsible for killing your baby. If you go and get that same baby killed at an abortion clinic and you call that your “choice” either way a baby was killed. Some of us think that is wrong. Supporting organizations that think this is right is what some of us are against. You don’t seem to get that. Komen stopped their support because PP is under investigation. It created a political firestorm that they could not or would not stand up to. They lose either way because I do not support organizations that promote or condone abortion.

    2. It already does that. My parttime position is funded by a Komen grant and it is very specific about what that money may be spent on. We also have to be accountable in our grant reports that the money was spent that way.

  5. Komen was smart?  Let’s recap the past week’s events.

    1.  Komen announces that they’re cutting funds to Planned Parenthood.  Liberal baby killers go crazy; many conservatives learn, for the first time, that Planned Parenthood was being funded to begin with.
    2.  Planned Parenthood uses the announcement as a fundraising tool.  The pro-life show their support for Komen’s decision by making donations to the foundation.
    3.  Komen reverses itself.  Liberals still don’t trust them, and conservatives are going crazy.

This was a public relations nightmare any way you look at it.

At the very least, Komen should offer to return the donations they recieved as a result of the initial decision.  Keeping that money just isn’t right.

    1. I agree.  No decision that immediately alienates more than half of your donor base and then gets reversed, alienating the other half of your donor base, is a ‘smart’ one.  This fiasco calls the leadership of Komen into question.  Reversal or not, I’m done with them. I’t s mind-blowing that they decided to put themselves into the abortion debate. My money will now go to Planned Parenthood.

  6. Why anyone would support a foundation like Komen is beyond me.  Renee instead of jumping on the bandwagon supporting Kumen giving funds to PP you need to do some research on Komen and the  big business of pink.  http://www.anneofcarversville.com/new/2012/2/3/canadian-documentary-pink-ribbons-inc-rips-into-komens-big-b.html

    1. I completely agree. Komen is incredibly unethical and is way more interested in profit than a cure. I didn’t support Komen before this scandal and I wont support them in the future.

      1. You can find plenty of website sites and articles that aren’t pro life that are critical of Koman and their unethical use of pink and being just in the business of raising money for the cure, but aren’t really interested in finding a cure. This is what annoys me about Renee’s column, she jump on the
bandwagon supporting PP and not really looking in more deeply about Komen.

  7. I have never disagreed with Renee Ordway more than I do regarding this matter. Komen for the Cure has every right to fund organizations that provide mammograms (Planned Parenthood does not), and should do so. It should not, however, fund organizations whose principle focus is to end life in the womb. I have never supported Komen for that very reason, and will not begin now. Had they stayed with their decision of earlier this week, I would have become a supporter.

    1. See above figures on the breakdown of Planned Parenthood’s services, according to The Associated Press.

  8. So do you want to support Breast Cancer Research for a Life Cure,
    OR
Murdering Innocent Babies in their “mothers” womb by Hacking them to Pieces then Sucking them out with a vacuum to be Flushed down the Toilet?

This is not a trick question. The Scam has been laid bare.
The liberal demoncrats have made their choice.
I and my family have made ours.  We choose Life.
And we will Pray for you Renee.

    1. sorry you  cant shove your views on everyone else?
my family chooses choice–you don’t like abortions? dont have one

    2. I agree with your choice of protecting the life of each unborn child, but is it necessary to demonize others while staking out your territory in this discussion?

    3. How about protecting the lives of women who may be at risk for breast cancer but it’s detected because of screening whether at PP or elsewhere? Aren’t they just as important? I believe having or not having an abortion is a matter of personal choice. It’s not yours, but mine. What I choose to do will affect only my life not yours and in some cases it’s better to abort that have an unwanted child.

  9. Hey Susan G. Komen…Don’t hire right-wing zealots with an agenda to politicize your Foundation and you’ll tend to avoid these issues…

  10. So a private organization establishes appropriate guidelines for making grants, acts consistently within these guidelines, and is pilloried by Congress, the press, and knee-jerk liberals for doing so. “Principled” columnists like Ms. Ordway run screaming, assuming that this organization is attempting to trample on their “rights” to take the lives of the unborn, then celebrate its cowardly decision to flop under pressure.

    And some call that courage.

In The Age of Obama, “philanthropy” is redefined. It now means that if you make charitable contributions, you are no longer allowed to deduct them from your income taxes, because the federal government wants all the power to determine which favored causes and classes receives the bulk of benevolence. It now means that if you do not support this forced philanthropy (gained at the point of an FBI gun as directed by the IRS), touted daily by Mr. Obama in the form of higher income taxes, then you are labeled “greedy”. It now means that if you run a highly reputable organization doing excellent work in support of women’s health, you risk your superb reputation and donor support if you decide against granting money to organizations that take the lives of thousands and thousands of (unborn) women each year.

In the Age of Obama, up is down, right is wrong, and wrong is right. Pres. Obama and VP Biden give less than 1% to charity each year, and yet their contender Mr. Romney is tarred as a rich greedy capitalist despite giving a far great percentage, totaling millions each year. The likes of Ms. Ordway are given weekly column inches to display their foolishness. Let us thank God for the First Amendment so we can identify then promptly ignore their silly advice.

Bear in mind that PP’s argument that clinical breast screenings are affected by Komen’s withdrawal of support. But as anyone with even half a clue knows, money is fungible, so the dollars you now give Komen they give to PP, which goes into their great big pot from which they serve over 300,000 abortions each year.

This Mainer is done with Komen.

    1. And you actually want us to believe you….Dannyboy, its not your breasts or your fetus that is involved in this….woman are involved, and they don’t need another God judging them. All of us fall short of the glory of God at times, but he is the altimate one that we have to answer too. Not you the righteous one….

Good Bye….It is so sad that you have to blame other people for your rotten life…especially the president. Hypocrisy at it’s best…don’t let the door hit you in the a_ _ on your way out into the real world Dannyboy….Good Day!

    2. If you insist on responding to propaganda and false information, be sure you make up for it by funding clinical screenings thorugh other channels.  And other work that Komen does.  Otherwise, you are the ultimate hypocrite.

  11. “Research has proven that abortion can often lead to breast cancer later in life.”

Observation has shown that abortion leads to dismemberment and death of unborn human beings.
For some reason, libs take joy in the death of babies.
Well one good thing, it means fewers libs stinking up the planet.

    1. Thank you for explaining that to all of us GOD….who the heck are you to judge others….Liberals don’t claim to hide behind their faith, because they know the scriptures…Mathew 7: 1 – 4

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with judgement you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why is it that you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when there is a log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log outy of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brothers eye… These are not my words….but the scripture …

I am a conservative for family values, but I will not hide behind my faith for family values and blame others or judge them without judging myself….He…our Lord and Savior is the ultimate judge…the same one that you and I will have to answer too…Amen.

  12. Good column, Renee.  Good to see that wiser heads can prevail against blindered harassment.  Kudos also to the local chapters of Komen who could not abide with the rash, unwsie policy  decisions of headquarters.

  13. That is a very simplistic rationalization for the death of a baby. It’s not illegal to kill yourself because you are doing it against yourself only. Murder is illegal because it kills another human being who had no choice in the matter. Suicide is a choice. Abortion is not.
