PORTLAND, Maine — The city of Portland has given OccupyMaine protesters until Monday morning to clear out of a city park.

The city served members of the OccupyMaine movement with an eviction notice Thursday, ordering them to remove all tents, structures and personal belongings from Lincoln Park by 8 a.m. Monday.

The eviction notice was hand-delivered.

A judge Wednesday upheld the city’s decision to deny Occupy Maine’s petition to continue its around-the-clock occupation of the park to protest corporate greed and economic inequality.

A lawyer for the protesters says they have no choice but to comply, but have asked for more time because many of the overnight campers are homeless.

One protester told The Portland Press Herald he has no intention of leaving and expects to be arrested.

    1. Completely wrong. The sit-in movement that began on 2/1/60 took months to spread across the south and into the north. It fueled second stage of the Civil Rights Movement that spawned the voting rights efforts in Mississippi and other states, the Freedom Riders, Freedom Summer , the Free Speech Movement in Berkley and eventually the Civil Rights Act passed by Congress in 1965. The Sit-Ins started with four college freshman on one day in one place. You underestimate them, and don’t understand what’s going on or history. Occupy Wall Street is less than FIVE MONTHS OLD!

  1. Let’s see: If you leave peacefully and were  homeless before Occupy-you are still homeless. If you put up even a mediocre resistence you’d have a reasonable chance of sleeping in a warm jail cell with hot food.

        1.   Not taking sides, just saying money normaly trumps most other thing in this world, sad but true. The more one grp. fears another it can lead to very uncomfortable situations, esp. if one is wealthier then the other.

          1. They WANT to work?!?!? Hardly! If they’d get off their duff instead of camping out and trashing a city park and whining about “poor little ol’ me,” they could make something of themselves. Following is a link for help wanted in the Portland area alone. If the occupiers want a helping hand, they need to look no further than the end of their arm.

          2. Have you (or they) looked at the link or more importantly, actively pursued employment at any of the places listed? There are currently 117 jobs available in 109 different job titles in Portland alone. Anybody that truly wants to work should have no trouble, unless (like many) they’re expecting premium pay for entry level positions. You’ve got to start somewhere.

  2. Wow…what is wrong with people these days there should not be a homeless person in America. We should try to get these ppl some help. Never leave our people out in the cold were there is a will there is a way. “Money is the root to all evil”! I work for a living like most of us but still I have a lot of compassion for others. There is a reason why the poor look after each other in this world because they have a heart which is more than I can say for some of the WEALTHY ppl. Just stating how I feel about all this.

    1.  Good. Now take all your money and go give it to them. I’m not going to offer them so much as an apple core.

  3. Good!  These people have cost the taxpayers enough money! I drove by there last week, and they have ruined that beautiful park!

  4. The OccupyMaine people have been camped in Lincoln Park since October 3, which makes today the FOUR month anniversary, not two months like the photo caption says. Does anyone check facts in this newspaper?

  5. to…..   i pledgemysacredhoner…you must be some kind of low life rat loser, this is all you ever post is how to report people for things… makes me wonder what kind of things are in your closet
