SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Police are looking for anyone involved in igniting a small, homemade explosive in or near a resident’s mailbox Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened between noon and 3:30 p.m. on Belle Marsh Road, according to South Berwick Police Lt. Chris Burbank. A homeowner reported returning home to find their mailbox was damaged.

The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office, along with South Berwick police, responded to the scene. It was determined remnants at the scene were consistent with a small, homemade chemical explosive concocted using commonly found household items.

The remnants and other evidence at the scene were shipped for analysis to the Maine Crime Lab.

Although the explosion appeared to be small, Burbank said it was easily capable of causing serious injury. Police have no suspects for this crime, which is considered a felony.

Police are not only asking for the public’s help in finding the suspects, but reminding people to remain vigilant as well. If they notice any suspicious looking bottles in unusual places, especially if they’re capped, partially filled with liquid or contain metal, they are encouraged to call police immediately.

There were no other reports of similar incidents in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Berwick Police Department at (207) 384-2254.

We as a society just can not allow this kind of destruction!  Please. Put up a new box and move on.

    1. Any mailbox used for U.S.P.S. is considered Federal “metal” or space, therefor subject to federal laws, a violation of which is a felony.
