CANTON, Maine — Authorities say a 64-year-old man in Canton, Maine, has died in a fire after he ran back into his burning home to try to save his dogs.
The state fire marshal’s office says the body of Sherwood Campbell was found in a second-floor bedroom of his home early Wednesday. He was last seen yelling for help from a second-floor window as flames engulfed his house Tuesday evening.
Authorities say Campbell managed to escape after the fire broke out about 5 p.m., but he went back in to try to rescue three dogs.
Campbell lived in the house with his parents, who were not at home.
Investigators say the fire likely started on the first floor near the kitchen and that they would further investigate to pinpoint the cause.

Sad.. We’ve always been told to NEVER go back in, but I probably would’ve done the same thing.
I would have too. My thoughts to his family and friends.
Me too. R.I.P.
once the fire is out isnt that late to save someone?
they obviously won’t be “saving” him. they will be recovering him.
so sad, but how much better man he was than the fool who intentionally burned his little boys in Washington state, he loved those dogs more than his own life
I too would more than likely done the same thing. I am sure there will be many who will say how stupid it was for him to do this. They simply don’t understand that sometimes love is unconditional. It matters not if those you love walk on four legs or two. My dogs and cats, (well most of the cats) are part of my family and I would do whatever I could to try to save them.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I hope they find comfort in knowing that he gave his life for the most noble of causes; love.
Yes, I know what you mean about what some people would say but my dog means the world to me (he loves me no matter what I look like or what I do or say) and I would do the same thing.
I don’t care what other people think. Animals are our children as well. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back into a burning house to save my four legged children. This man is my hero. He gave his life to save his loved ones. R.I.P. Mr. Campbell.
Rest in peace, Mr. Campbell. St. Francis of Assisi will guide you from now on.
Very sad…
