ROCKLAND, Maine — The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of metal thieves who are targeting marine businesses.
Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison said there have been thefts across the state and locally at a couple of sites in Friendship.
She said deputies have had contact with several vehicles containing scrap metal and recently cut metal with marine paint on it. Information developed by the investigation shows metal thieves are targeting marine wharfs and boats because of the availability of brass and stainless steel.
Dennison noted no one has been charged since it is difficult to prove where the metal came from after it has been cut. She said officers have put a lot of time into the investigation.
The sheriff advised wharf and boat owners to photograph or videotape their properties in the event of a theft. Any evidence will assist law enforcement in apprehending and prosecuting the responsible parties, she said.
