AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Chief Justice Leigh Saufley will address lawmakers in an annual update on the third branch of state government.
Saufley presents her State of the Judiciary address Thursday morning to a joint House-Senate session in the State House.
Courthouse security and providing adequate legal services for the poor have been priorities for Saufley.
In October, the chief justice announced a program to publicly recognize attorneys who provide free legal services to people in need. She said donated services are especially important in today’s harsh economic climate.
In last year’s address to lawmakers, Saufley said civil cases have been on the rise in Maine courts, while criminal cases have been falling.
Previously, she has expressed hope to improve courthouse security by screening for weapons on more days that courts are in session.
I hope she addresses Maine’s sentencing structure. Maybe some minimums or how about a Three Strikes Law or dare I say it the Death Penalty!
DP will never happen in Maine, much to my dismay. One strike you’re out re: Sex offenders/child molesters/murder. Life in prison, period…end of story. Drug crime sentences are way too lenient, IMO. Two strikes, you are out…serve MAX. sentence, period. No plea deals, ifs/ands/or buts.
