PORTLAND, Maine — Bangor-based Husson University wants to boost its profile in southern Maine by opening a campus in Portland.
Husson officials confirmed Wednesday they are seeking approval from the city for a new campus on a seven-acre parcel on outer Congress Street.
Husson currently operates a satellite campus in South Portland and another in Presque Isle. Its main campus in Bangor has about 2,800 students.
John Rubino, Husson’s vice president of administration, told The Portland Press Herald that that while the university has a presence in the Portland area, it doesn’t project its true image as a university that offers four-year, master’s and doctorate degrees.
Husson anticipates that the Portland campus initially would have 350 students, with enrollment expected to grow over a period of years to 440 students.

No! Keep it unique and centered in Bangor. Make those interested from the south come up here to study.
Perhaps some of these heroes from out of state that we’ve been seeing in the paper will choose the Portland campus . It’s closer to home.
