GARDINER, Maine — In time for President’s Day holiday weekend car sales, a state agency is promoting its guide giving tips on how Maine consumers can evaluate financing options for a buying a vehicle and protect their rights.
The “Downeaster Guide to Consumer Credit” is put out by the Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection.
The bureau says the guide gives pointers on things such as how to get the best price for a trade-in, compare credit options and learn about a vehicle’s reliability before making a purchase.
The guide is available by calling the agency or by visiting credit.maine.gov and clicking on “consumer guides.”

I can give you a complete “consumers guide” in one sentence:
Buy a car anywhere, except Bumper2Bumper/Bangor Car Care.
where is the best place to buy a car in Bangor/brewer area? What about whited Ford?
Want to save money on purchasing a car? Buy it out of state where there is more competition. For some reason, and it’s not delivery charges, Maine dealers are less inclined to deal as aggressively as dealers in other New England states. In fact they often have an arrogant attitude of “take it or leave it.” Take a long weekend trip to Boston, Nashua, Albany, or some other urban area. You’ll save way more than the cost of the trip.
The Dedham automile west of Boston has GREAT deals
What happens when the car is registered in Maine? I’m thinking of sales tax. Sure wouldn’t want to pay it twice.
Pretty sure that if you’re buying out of state, you wouldn’t pay sales tax to that state, but would pay the tax to Maine when you register the car. Maybe someone can confirm this??
confirmed – just make sure you don’t pay the out of state tax.
#1. Pay cash
#2. Don’t buy new.
#3. Have it checked out.
#4. It’s true. Everybody lies.
