BANGOR, Maine — Junior center Hayden Ciomei scored 22 points to lead four Deer Isle-Stonington players in double figures as the sixth-seeded Mariners knocked No. 3 Washburn 67-57 Saturday night in an Eastern Maine Class D boys quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

The Mariners (13-7) will play No. 2 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, an 88-62 winner over Greater Houlton Christian Academy, in the semifinals Thursday at 2:05 p.m.

Junior forward Tim Cormier and junior guard Sam Grindle added 14 points each for Deer Isle-Stonington, and junior guard Connor Morey had 10.

Junior guard Mitch Worcester scored a game-high 31 points to pace the Beavers (17-3), senior guard Jordan McLaughlin posted 11 and senior center Chase Chandler had 10.

The Mariners closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run that gave them a 19-11 lead after one quarter, but the Beavers closed the gap to four points (28-24) with three minutes to go before halftime.

The Mariners rode a 25-5 wave at the end of the first half through the first 5:15 of the third quarter to take a 20-point lead (49-29) and the Beavers never got closer than nine from then on.

  1. thank you for  posting  I had sent an email earlier and  a few mins after I sent  that the  game  was  posted. So you do work long  hours  during the  tournament. Again thanks. I knew the  Bangor  radio Station   was doing the Bangor  game and  the  WDEA  station out  of  Ellsworth  didn’t  choose  to  do  county  wide  teams  in the  tournament  so  YOU,  the BDN are my source. Thanks I live in Az now  and grew up  on   Deer Isle.  Dave
