BATH, Maine — A Bath woman is lucky to be alive and her live-in boyfriend is being held on $100,000 cash bail following a brutal domestic violence knife attack Monday morning, according to Bath Police Lt. Stan Cielinski.
Matthew T. Wycoff, 28, who police think moved to Bath within the past couple of months, is charged with Class A elevated aggravated assault and is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. According to Cielinski, a verbal argument between Wycoff and his 38-year-old girlfriend escalated to Wycoff stabbing her multiple times in the neck and shoulder with a steak knife. Cielinski said the woman is in serious but stable condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
“She’s pretty lucky,” said Cielinski. “I think what saved her was that at some point when he was attacking her, the blade on his knife broke.”
Other adults who were present in the Washington Street apartment — who Cielinski said were roommates — called police at 6:54 a.m. when the couple began fighting, but before the physical attack. Officers arrived at the scene to find the woman conscious and alert, but with serious stab wounds. Witnesses told police that Wycoff had fled in a black Kia sport utility vehicle. Police issued an alert to area departments and at 7:34 a.m., Topsham Police Officers Randy Cook and William Collins saw the Kia at a Gibb’s gas station on Main Street in Topsham. Wycoff was taken into custody without further incident, said Cielinski.
“That was some good police work by Topsham police,” said Cielinski. “They didn’t have any problems.”
Wycoff has a criminal record, but Cieliski said late Monday morning that the investigation into the attack was just beginning and he didn’t yet have details about Wycoff’s record. He said Wycoff is approximately 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs about 240 pounds.
“He’s a big guy,” said Cielinski. “This could have gone even worse for the victim.”
Cielinski said the woman lost a lot of blood at the scene of the attack. He did not know Monday morning if the other adults who were in the home at the time tried to intervene.
Cielinski said investigators were in the process of interviewing the witnesses and victim Monday morning and that he expected Wycoff to appear in court Tuesday. Class A elevated aggravated assault, which is the most serious assault charge under Maine law, could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years if Wycoff is convicted.

30 years in the state of Maine? I seriously doubt it! Can you say plea bargain.
His father use to be a police officer! I bet you’ll find the kid was on drugs. NOT trying to make excuses, just saying.
What more could he have done to her-SHORT OF KILLING HER- to be denied bail? He does not have the money, but if he did he’d be out.
I was thinking the same thing. Geez!
Hey, all you advocates for carrying a firearm for protection. Any opinion? I think it could have gone either way.
If you don’t have the ability to shoot someone, you shouldn’t try to use a gun for self defense. You have to have a very strong will to survive. Not just anybody can pull that trigger. I do believe that if everyone carried a gun, the word would be safer place within one year. After that no one would mess with each other.
time to take out the trash
I believe that the stats don’t support that theory. Just saying.
Let this be a lesson to all of you who hate guns, a weapon is only a tool, if someone wants to maim or kill you they will find a way, in this case the tool was a knife. Is the knife any less lethal than a gun?
If someone there had a weapon maybe they could have taken him out before he caused that harm and proven that it is indeed stupid to bring a knife to a gunfight.
Before the gun haters swarm you I have to say this as a pro gun guy. Some people should NOT have guns in their home and these two are a perfect example. I would venture to say she probably had a good idea this was coming and should have left a long time ago. But alas hindsight is always 20/20.
well, I would have been happy knowing that i had one, just in case mr. crazy in the kia ran into me at the store and still was on a rampage! Maine is just getting worse and worse, and I know that is bound to happen, but it seems to be happening at lightening speed!
absolutely right! She could have shot him!!
Do you mean he should have shot her ?
Interesting take on the comment.
Stabed her multiple times. Why not an attempted murder charge ?
I agree, stabbing her in the neck like that is attempted murder
Another “fine”, “outstanding”, pillar of the community!
i believe it was his father that was the gouldsboro town cop for YEARS
That particular community is ripe with this type of trash.
When seconds count….the police are only minutes away….
I am no lover of la policia, but I think that they get there just as fast as humanly possible. Big brother can’t be around every second of every day to protect us.
As for the 6’5″ knife wielding thug that decided to beat and stab on his girl, well, I am pretty sure their won’t be any defenseless girls to beat on where he is going. And if he gets in a jam, “response” times might be a tad slow…just sayin’…
It is true that in most cases the police get there asap . But , in most cases thats not fast enough to keep people from serious injury. As long as there are unstable people in the world the stable people need to be very careful about who they have in their life ! Then again its hard to know somebody if the practice deceit and usually you have to invest months if not years to truly get to truly know someone !
No one is faulting the police, the saying is a statement that people need to be prepared to defend themselves.
What would a 38 year old want with a 28 year old? I would say they both need to grow up……..in different directions. …………and no I don’t think a 38 year old man should take up with a 28 year old women.
I ask myself the same question…. My ex is 55 and living with a 21 year old!!!! Sick. Didn’t people call these kinds of men ” Dirty old men?” Now-a-days, I guess people just turn their heads and proclaim “It’s none of our business” It’s a strange world we live in.
I hope that they lock him up and throw away the key. He should be charged with attempted murder.
What happened to that new DOMESTIC VIOLENCE bill they were talking about in Augusta? Dragging their feet again on something SO important!!
I think it was ‘serial stalking’ bill if I recall correctly.
I believe there was one for Domestic Violence that came about after the mother and kids were murdered by the ex husband/father. Something about much tougher laws regarding D.V. I could be wrong…
wow
His father was a police officer for many many years . You’ll probably find out later that the kid was one drugs, NOT making excuses but I think he has
had a problem with them in the past. I think he should be put away for a
long time. I wonder what the roommates were doing while she was almost
killed.
aint he creepy
NO BAIL
This is probably what would have happened in Bangor, (or worse), if the Bangor resident did NOT own a firearm and know how to use it. What goes around comes around. (Hopefully for this lowlife).
I grew up with him…I guess you never really know someone. Scary.
He’ll probably have to post $60.00 bail like the Hermon home invasion guy! Some judicial system we have here in Maine!
He should be held WITHOUT bail.
Hes a coward picking on Women
How about an up date on the woman and the scum bag
