CARIBOU – Roberta Sue (Thornton) Blackstone, 54, wife of Murray Blackstone, died peacefully Feb. 19, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones in Bangor after a brief illness.

She was born March 2, 1957, in Presque Isle, daughter of Philip and Bess (Green) Thornton.

She graduated from Caribou High School, class of 1975. Shortly after graduation she married her high school sweetheart and started a family with Murray D. Blackstone. She loved gardening, fishing, crafting, cooking, working on the farm, and most of all her family. Her love of flowers earned her the Caribou Garden Club Beautification Award in 2000. This honor inspired her to open Farmhouse Greenhouse in 2005 fulfilling her lifelong dream. Her dedication to the family farm aided in proudly being named Maine Potato Board Farm Family of the Year in 2003. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Surviving are her husband, Murray D. Blackstone; and her mother, Bess, both of Caribou; three children, Murray Dan Blackstone and his wife, Sheri, Jenny Sue Coon and her husband, Matthew, of Caribou and Bill Douglas Blackstone and his fiancee, Laura McGlinn, of Caribou; two brothers, John Thornton and his wife, Karyn, of Woodland and Robert Thornton of Ashland; one sister, Cynthia Heron and her husband, Jeffrey, of Caribou; and four grandchildren, Sheridan Mae Blackstone, Brendan Dyer Blackstone, Nolan Scott Coon and Lily Ann Coon, all of Caribou. She is loved and will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones. She was predeceased by her father, Philip D. Thornton.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Gray Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Bentum, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery. For an online register, please go to
