BANGOR, Maine — Junior guard Sigrid Koizar had 21 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals as No. 4 Stearns of Millinocket defeated No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 46-24 in an Eastern Maine Class C girls basketball quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon.
Stearns (17-2) will play the winner of Tuesday’s later semifinal between No. 1 Orono and No. 8 Houlton. MA ends its season with a 14-5 record, with three of the losses coming against Stearns.
Koizar, an exchange student who played with the Austrian national 18-and-under team last summer, shot 8 of 13 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line while also working to free up her teammates for open shots.
Alex Mooney, a junior guard, took the most advantage, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 12 points overall.
Mattanawcook held an 11-9 lead after Harli Maxwell made a layup 22 seconds into the second quarter, but Stearns scored 12 unanswered points to build a 21-11 lead, a run that stretched to 25-2 in the third quarter when Koizar hit a jumper and a drive to give the Minutemen a 34-13 cushion.
Ashley Rollins added eight points and 10 rebounds for Stearns.
Taylor Hawkins scored 10 points and Katie Krapf eight for Mattanawcook.
