BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine — A giant 27-pound lobster has been caught off the Maine coast, but it won’t be going into a pot of boiling water.

Cushing shrimp fisherman Robert Malone caught the monster crustacean in his nets Friday, said Maine State Aquarium Director Aimee Hayden-Rodriques. Malone gave it to the Department of Marine Resources for its aquarium in Boothbay Harbor.

The beast weighed in at 27 pounds and measured nearly 40 inches long. It was dubbed Rocky because it was caught in the Rockland area, but Hayden-Rodriquez said it could have been named for Rocky the boxer because its claws are big enough to pack quite a punch.

The lobster is the biggest ever brought to the aquarium, surpassing the previous biggest one by 4 pounds. It’s downright huge compared to lobsters people eat, which typically weigh between 1 and 2 pounds.

The biggest lobster on record was caught off Nova Scotia and weighed more than 40 pounds.

Hayden-Rodriquez says Rocky will soon be released into the ocean because he will fare better in the wild.

  1. Why on earth do they keep publishing stories that don’t include a photo when the subject of the story so obviously should be represented with a photo?

        1. I seen the ground round spell lobster like that on their sign inviting people to come in here in bangor and I happen to over hear tourist laughing and taking pictures saying look they spell it like they say it and went on to say only in Maine…it seriously makes us look ridiculous

          1. Actually you are wrong.  I remember back in the late 50’s early 60’s when my dad used to get the occasional lobster weighing 16 lbs or so.  You could cut the tail like a filet mignon, slice after slice, and it was delicious.  Not tough at all.  If it were not harmful to the survival of lobster I would still want them large like that.  Even the legs, which most people can’t be bothered with on a 1 1/2 lb lobster, are big enough to enjoy.  Almost like the leg of a king crab.  Yum, so delicious.  My mouth is watering.

          2. I have taken those legs and put them between two layers of plastic wrap and then roledl the meat out with a rolling pin. I have used that meat for lobster butter and for ravioli filling.

          3. That’s funny, my dad lobstered of MDI for years and when we ate an oversized lobster, it was like chewing  the toughest steak you could buy.  I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole!!!

      1.  As I already said to the two other people who said the same thing as you, when I first commented on this when it was first posted, there was no photo for several hours at least.  They posted the photo after I said something.

  2. Thanks to conservation policies in this State ¨¨Rocky¨¨ will be going back to the deep blue Gulf of Maine where he can continue to breed. ¨Rocky¨ is at least 50 years old by my estimates.

      1. There is no way a lobsterman could sell this legally. However if he wanted to keep it himself and eat it that would be something else all together. A big male like that is probably pretty scarred up and a bit tough though.

  3. Let me know when and where they’re releasing him, and I’ll bring the butter, napkins AND the bathtub :) Seriously though, a lobster that big probably would not be good eating and is better off as a “hunka hunka burning lobsta love”

    1. Buttah? Is that Maine uneducated slang? Oh wait that is suppose to be funny like lobstah? Insults a mainer if u ask me

      1. “It’s a damn poor mind that can think of only one way
to spell a word!” — Andrew Jackson.

        Lighten up….

        1. blackbear needs to understand what educated spelling means, Buttah isn’t even a real word so it doesn’t count as a word at all so why lighten up if it doesn’t make any sense?? I guess eating paint chips is another way to use paint other then just painting?? Yes..you must do that.– Not Andrew Jackson

      2. You should really look up Ben Franklin’s dictionary. In his brilliant mind he thought the same way as many of us, that things should be spelled as they sound, thus “school” should be spelled “skool.” Granted “lobstah” is more of a regional thing, but it doesn’t show a lack of intelligence. Like a Britian calling it a “puncture” rather than a flat tire (tyre in England). So be careful what you say, the Cultural Sensitivity Police are everywhere.

    2. BUTTAH?? LEARN HOW TO SPELL CORRECTLY!! SOME PEOPLE JUST NEED TO SPEAK ENGLISH AND NOT LIKE THEY ARE IN A HIP HOP/RAP SONG!! LMAO!!

      1. And some people like to shout in all caps and use punctuation incorrectly.  Can we get back to Rocky the lobster now?

    1. And they are rubbery. Just like eating the eraser on your pencil. I’m not the one that ate it, I do not like lobster myself. Yes, I was born and raised here in Maine.

      1. It how they are cooked were i buy them in NH they cook them right there in real hot water the place is called Sanders Brothers . I know people at the railroad that have gone down there an got them an they loved the big ones

        1.  There is a trick to cooking them, especially the females. Most large lobsters that people say are rubbery are that way because of overcooking.

Those large lobsters that you are eating in NH are not from Maine. They are from Canada most likely. Im not sure how big NH and Massachusetts allow the carapace to be on lobsters there. Here in Maine the minimum is 3.25 inches and the max is 5 inches. Most lobsters around 5 pounds will start being too large to take.

  4. where is the marine patrol first dragging lobster and keeping it is illegal and two ya think he is just a little over the measure guess its just a free for all down there i now know where to land dragged lobster

    1. The Lobster got caught in shrimp nets. Obviously the shrimper(who likely is also a lobsterman) didnt “keep it”. He contacted the Aquarium, which wanted the  lobster.

      1. Dosent matter it was still caught by dragging somebody knows a higher up a buddy of mine caught one a lot bigger than that last year he threw it back saw the pictures of it while his sternman was holding it up and it was caught half way in a trap guess you guys dont see big ones like that we do not a big deal still illegal how it was caught and size

          1.  IF he is even a sterner is in question. Everyone who knows anything about lobster knows that oversized lobsters get into traps. Lobsters get caught up in shrimp nets. So do other things like haddock. Keeping those lobsters and trying to sell them or keeping them for your own consumption is illegal. It is not uncommon for seven or eight pounders to turn up in traps and have to be thrown back.

However this was a 27 pound lobster which means it is most likely around 50 years old if not closer to 60, depending on the way lobsters are figured to molt and age. I dont think the shrimper did anything wrong by calling the aquarium and asking them if the wanted to take possession of the lobster. Obviously the marine patrol has not trouble with it.

    1.  Lobsters get dragged up by accident in shrimp nets. Oversize lobsters get into traps. Lobsters caught up in drag nets have to be thrown back. Lobsters that have too large or too small a carapice have to be thrown back.

I think before anyone starts talking about illegal behavior we have to keep in mind the following. This lobster was of unusual size and thus unusual age. It was not sold for profit. The lobster was not used for human consumption by the shrimp dragger(who is most likely also a lobsterman). Being a unique specimen it was sent to the State Aquarium.  If this was a seven pound lobster it would have most likely been thrown right back with out second thought. But it was a 27 pounder.

If it belongs in the aquarium or in nature(where no one will ever see it) is of course up for debate.

  5. king obama DEMANDS his lobster,he wants to send it to afganistan  as an apology to score some “brownie” points….guess he doesn’t realize it isn’t kosher

    1. Nice: regency, an American President, Asia and Jewish dietary restrictions all in one tortured sentence. (You do realize Kosher isn’t Muslim, right–and neither is Obama?) I may have to forward this one.

  6. when i lived in milbridge a nieghbor came over witha real big lobster they hauled up dragging , musta been 15-18lbs  freakin huge ….then took it down to the wyman rd warf and released it
