LINCOLN – Thelma “Sally” (Johnston) Smith, 96, wife of the late William C. “Bill” Smith, passed away Feb. 22, 2012, at a Lincoln hospital. She was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Patten, daughter of Claude and Susan (Emerson) Johnston.

Sally and Bill were married Aug. 29, 1933. She enjoyed knitting mittens and socks for the children and grandchildren. She liked going to bingo, and the reunions at her favorite spot, the lake. She had attended Motorcycle Weekend in Laconia, N.H., and had been on several family cruises. She enjoyed all the family meals at the farm and the very special times she spent with the county folks. She had worked for many years at the worsted mill.

She is survived by four children, Janice and Matt Matthews of Governeur, N.Y., Bob and Loree of Benton, Larry and Lorraine of Lincoln, and Doug and Judy of Oakland; two daughters-in-law, Jean and Peggy; sister, Joyce Beaulieu of Mapleton; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Carolee Sue; two sons, Fletcher and Danny; two brothers, Sandy and Delmont; and sister, Jessie.

Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Chet Dana officiating. Spring interment will be at Lincoln Center Cemetery. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at
