BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 13-year-old Brunswick boy was charged Tuesday night with felony arson after police say he set a brush fire that burned approximately 2 acres of blueberry fields near Brunswick High School.
Brunswick Police Detective Bill Moir said today that three 13-year-old males were allegedly involved in the incident, but that charges were only filed against the boy who police believe started the fire off of Scarponi Drive.
That boy was processed at the Brunswick Police Department and released to his parents pending an April 11 appearance in West Bath District Court.
According to fire department dispatch logs, firefighters from Brunswick, Freeport, Topsham and West Bath fire departments responded to the blaze. Firefighters cleared the scene after approximately 90 minutes.
Fire department records available this morning did not include details of how exactly the fire started and Brunswick Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Emerson, who was on scene, was in a meeting and not immediately available for comment.

Is it common practice to burn blueberry fields to naturally prune the field to stimulate higher yields of said crops?? Certainly wrong for this young person to have done this, but what actually was destroyed or lost due to his actions?? Does it warrant a “felony arson charge” for a 13 year old?
I was thinking he saved the blueberry field owner work this spring . maybe his timing isnt right but he probably has seen them burn fields before !
