WESTBROOK, Maine — A former high school teacher and coach will spend five days in jail for furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to police.
Timothy Gillis, 43, of Portland provided alcohol to a minor during an incident at his apartment in August, Westbrook police Lt. Michael Nugent said in a news release.
He resigned on Oct. 3 from his teaching and boys varsity soccer and tennis coaching posts in the wake of the investigation.
He was summoned in November for furnishing a place for minors to consume liquor and furnishing liquor to a minor, the release stated.
Gillis also surrendered his teaching license, according to the release.

Coach Tim didn’t have a clear understanding of “No child left behind.”
So — he was a current teacher at the time he did it? Right? Five days, that will scare him.
And loss of career.
Thats about the same amount of time a female teacher would get for sexually abusing of a student.
Care to back that up?
Wow, he’d have been better off going on a home invasion and getting his partnar in crime killed. That dude hasn’t had any punishment yet.
Parents should get jail time for doing the same thing…instead we call it parental choice. Joke. 99% of all messed up kids can trace the source of their problems to a couple of sperm and egg donors.
How old was this ‘minor’? 14 or 17-18? What did he give him, a lousy beer or was he totally drunk on whiskey? No info!
Only one count, so it doesn’t sound endemic. Not worthy of the loss of a job and the license to support oneself (from what’s reported here). I’ll reserve my personal judgment ’till all (if any) of the story’s out…
Sorry, but whether it is one beer or a case of JD, he has no right to make the decision to give alcohol to a minor. If I want my kid to have a beer when he is at home or camping something that is MY decision as a parent.
You are right in the general scheme, but my question was, without knowing the details, was this particular transgression worthy of loosing a hard earned license? That’s all I am wondering about….
A teacher giving a student anything illegal should result in their termination. Lets not lower the bar of what we expect from those we trust with our kids.
Yes fired maybe not lose a way to support ones self unless thier is more to the story.
Hmmm. And to think I used to bum a cigarette of my principal.
Was he diddled, or just handed a beer?
Still not enough info for ME to decide if the ‘crime’ warranted the punishment!
The edit was a missing apostrophe.
They guy made a mistake he paid he did the crime but loosing teachers lic seems a little much to me. Again I do not have details .
I just can’t belive that people are NOT looking into the teachers lifestyle in Maine – before they hire them. Its just plain stupid. I am a teacher (NOT IN MAINE) and I am thankful that I was fully checked out by the school board before I was hired as all of us teacher continue to be on a regular basis!
You think Maine doesn’t do background checks? Does the fact that you “checked out by the school board” make you (anyone) exempt from doing anything immoral, indecent or illegal in the future?
No it does not. But ranom police checks at anytime, a being a moral person sure helps. Maine does NO WHERE near what the check any organization should do. – JUST look at the CANADIAN educational system – they have NO WHERE near what MAine has with problems concerning their teachers – and partly because of all the security checks and rechecks.
We get fingerprinted.
so are Canadians
“palin stupid”? Is that a political insult?
Let me guess….you are an English teacher.
Needs more editing !!
this cr-p goes on in maine more than gets in newspaper
