JONESBORO, Maine — A fire reported early Wednesday morning destroyed the Jonesboro home of Mark Smith at 323 Looks Point Road.
Smith was out taking a walk when the fire was reported just before 6:30 a.m. Firefighters from the Washington County communities of Jonesboro, Jonesport, Machias, East Machias, Machiasport and Roque Bluffs responded, and some remained on the scene for more than seven hours.
A definitive cause of the fire could not be determined Wednesday by local firefighters. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating.

For the owner, this is a daily constitutional. He walks for his health every morning at the time in question.
or maybe he likes to exercise early in the morning..yesterday was a beautiful day….there is nothing suspicious about walking at 6:30 in the morning
Many people who work early shifts, earlier than 9am, walking at 6:30am is the only time available and gives them the clear head to face another day’s work. Why is it always suspicious when someone wants to get out of bed early and enjoy the beauty of nature that surrounds us in the Sunrise County?
6 am isn’t all that uncommon to see people out walking or running in some places. Getting up early to go fishing or hunting somewhere I’ve seen many people out jogging in the wee hours before. Doesn’t the gym in Machias open up at like 5 in the morning or something like that. I seem to recall a decent number of people up at that time to get there time in.
Going for a walk at 630am is NOT at all suspicious. Are you serious?? Perhaps you don’t know what you’re talking about???
Too bad that this happened, but it sure looks like he left something on.
My ailing mother left the kettle on and her dog had to wake her up before the place ended up flat.
Walking the dog at 6:30 am? Perfectly normal!
Sorry for your loss, Mr. Smith.
This is a terrible loss. I’m very sorry.
