ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two people are facing felony theft charges for reportedly stealing more than $1,000 worth of items from an Ellsworth supermarket last weekend.

Ellsworth police have issued summonses to Crystal Jones, 51, of Hancock and Keith Morse, 46, of Ellsworth for an incident in which the pair, along with a third, unnamed suspect, allegedly walked out of the Ellsworth Hannaford with $1,020 worth of groceries in three shopping carts. Lt. Harold Page said the thefts, which were captured on surveillance cameras, occurred between 7 and 8 p.m. Sunday.

Jones and Morse are facing Class C theft charges, which carry a maximum punishment of five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. The third suspect, who is male, has been identified but is still being sought, Page said Thursday.

  1. Well, this isn’t like stealing a candy bar. With today’s economy its easy to rack up 1000 dollars in groceries. I’m curious to see what items were stolen. I’m guessing a lot of alcohol and meat. But regardless, its never okay to steal. If you’re hungry, there’s a lot of programs out there to help people that need it. Sounds like a bunch of scum bags trying to rip off a business.

    1. Yes, I’d be curious to know what was in the carts too.  You’re right of course, stealing of anything is very wrong.  However I could forgive stealing food whereas I couldn’t forgive theft of anything else.  Well maybe medical supplies that weren’t used for recreational purposes.

  2. According to EPD- ” there was almost $700 worth of booze. Fourteen 30 packs of beer and 25 bottles of liquor.”  I’m glad these losers were caught! Great Job Hannaford and EPD!

    1. how did they think that they were going to be able to get out with all that? Theres cameras pointed right in the alcohol isle and the doors are near the registers lol they must of been drunk already!

  3. $1o20.00 worth of groceries, $700.00 of which Ellsworth PD’s facebook page says is alcohol? Sounds like a bunch of drunks that had munchies. Forgot about the cameras or they would have smiled pretty. Then we may have had a picture of them.

  4. They must have been watching ‘Extreme Couponing” where the woman got 3 carts of groceries for nothing. They just skipped the coupon clipping part.

  5. Again. Someone took the register last yeat too.  There should be more obvious police on the beat. not just in auto.

  6. Hannaford is guilty of stealing from the population of Hancock county for a long time, but you never see any reports about it. It is like an organized crime syndicate, the way they hold the populace under a gun with onions at $1.50 per pound, and dried pasta and couscous astronomically priced. They make the mafia look like philanthropists.

    1. Back when they were the only game in Ellsworth they were the highest grossing Shop and Save in the State. The prices there are higher but not as bad as Shaws in most cases. Which begs the question- how can a regular person, or perhaps someone even a bit better off not go to Walmart to shop for groceries? A bottle of Diet Coke is 1.25 at Walmart and 1.65 at Hannaford. There are lots of things like this. People with less money have to go to Walmart. Even people with money dont like paying forty cents more for something they can get cheaper in another place.
