DEER ISLE – Roger Austin Davis, 77, died peacefully Feb. 20, 2012, surrounded by three generations of his family at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. Roger was born June 22, 1934, on Deer Isle, to Austin M. and Harriet (Gray) Davis.

On Jan. 21, 1955, he married Marilyn Damon. They made their home on top of Southeast Hills with their daughters, Donna and Sandra. Throughout his life he worked hard at many trucking jobs on the island. In the late ’60s, with help from his father-in-law, Cecil Damon, he began building F/V Donna Sandra. After the launch in 1972, he was able to do what he enjoyed most – fish for lobsters and scallops in the coastal waters off Deer Isle-Stonington with his wife, Marilyn, as his first mate. When not on the boat, they liked to spend as much time as they could at their camp. For more than 30 years, they traveled south during the winter months to spend the off-season in Tarpon Springs, Fla. He particularly enjoyed exploring campgrounds and county fairs throughout New England. Since retiring in 2008, he was able to devote his time to gardening. Eating vegetables, raspberries and strawberries fresh from his gardens was something that he enjoyed, if his grandchildren and great-grandchildren didn’t get to them first!

Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; brother, Edward and wife, Beverly, and their family; daughter, Donna and husband, Frank Gotwals; daughter, Sandra and husband, Danny Weed; granddaughter, Chasity Cash and husband, Todd, and daughter, Emersyn; grandson, Jason McDonald and wife, Haley, and daughters, Adeline and Jillian; granddaughter, Torri Robbins and husband, Jason, and sons, Corey and Samuel Dennis; granddaughter, Andrea Weed and her partner, Jen, and daughter, Soleil. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A graveside committal is scheduled 1 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Forrest Hill Cemetery, Reach Road, Deer Isle. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Stonington.
