BANGOR, Maine — When Houlton freshman guard Kyle Bouchard turned in a strong game to help the Houlton Shiretowners beat Mattanawcook Academy 40-39 in an Eastern Maine Class C semifinal Friday, he was following a family tradition of fine basketball play at the Auditorium started by his grandfather, Terry Spurling, and carried on by his parents, Karen and Marty Bouchard.

Spurling played in the first tourney at the new Bangor Auditorium in 1956 and also helped Ellsworth earn a berth in the New England tourney.

Spurling’s daughter, Karen, married Marty Bouchard after they both enjoyed fine basketball careers for the Shiretowners in the 1980s.

  1. Nice story.  This is something that has I’ve always found interesting about Maine; the generational quality of the high school basketball players.

  2. Do hope the new Bangor Arena Auditorium will have the same ambience as the old one.  It will help to have the basketball Hall of Fame there for tourney fans to peruse while on the premises.
